Not enough space? You're kidding, right?

Question

I just bought a new computer that came with Roxio Creator Basic 9. It seems like a simple enough program that even I should be able to make it work.

I'm trying to copy a series of video DVDs that are in the range of 7 GB. I copy the disc, and the program asks me to put in a DVD DL disc. I put one in, and almost immediately it tells me that there is not enough space on the disc, and that I should use a disc that has 7.5 GB (or 6.8, or whatever the particular disc happens to be).

I've tried updating my drivers (they were up to date, being a new computer and all). I've copied smaller DVDs using standard DVD-R discs and they work fine. I've played around with the settings and I can't figure it out.

Having just dropped all this money on a new computer, I don't really want to spend more to get a different program if the one that my computer came with is supposed to work, but I'm getting pretty frustrated with it.

Any help?

Justin

Two answer both sets of questions:

The DVDs are not commercial, so they should copy okay.

The burner is HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-H30L. I simply assumed it was capable of Dual Layer, but I could be wrong on that, any ideas?

As for updating the firmware, I'm trying to figure out how. I've tried to follow the directions on the Roxio support site, but they're not up to date for Windows Vista. Can't seem to get anywhere that seems helpful.

Thanks,

Justin

That drive should handle dual layer discs

Firmware has nothing to do with either the app or the OS - it's similar to BIOS in that it 'lives' in a programmable chip in the drive and is responsible for drive operation in read and write mode. You can obtain it from here (be sure to read the instructions carefully)

As that is a HP drive, I'm wondering if you have the Hewlett Packard version of the software as this doesn't work in quite the same manner as the full suite (HP made some changesd and some programs are omitted)

However, did you check at the bottom of MyDVD for the disc size? There is a drop down menu at the bottom for setting that

gi7omy,

I have looked at MyDVD and I see the drop down menu at the bottom that gives me the option of disc size, and 8.5 is an option there.

However, I can't figure out how to take the DVD image I copied using Creator Basic and put it into MyDVD (They're seperate programs on my computer, don't know if that's always the case). I played around with it for a while last night and got nowhere.

Is it possible to just use MyDVD for this? Is there an option to copy my original disc in MyDVD?

I guess my next step is to contact HP and see what they tell me.

Thanks,

Justin

You just import any avi/mpg/whatever file you have into MyDVD (oproviding you have the correct codecs of course) and then render that. This will take about as long as the original duration to convert to DVD format and then will burn that to the blank

In EMC9, Creator, etc are all in the suite (listed separately tho). What I usually do here is to output MyDVD to the hard drive as a .iso file and then use that image to produce the DVD (splitting the operation in two)

How that will work with Creator Basic, I honestly can't say
