Fast Motion causing hangs or skips on playback

Delt

Question

Okay... I have a video clip that is rather long but important to lead up to the climax. I want to fast foward to the climax and then slow motion.

I split into two segments. I increase speed to 2.0 in first segment. I decrease speed to 0.5 in climax segment.

Basically, it's a fight... fast through entire fight, slow at the knockout.

Now when I play the 2.0 part in VideoWave, the blue line hangs for like a second, then jumps several frames forward then hangs again, then jumps (skipping frames from view) then hangs.

If I change speed back to normal it's fine.

More odd, I have similar clips recorded in the same fashion that seem to work pretty good at 2.0 speed.

Any ideas?

Whoever locked my thread in the Program Errors forum could have at least been kind enough to provide an answer.

I wasn't sure which to post in and I think it's more of a support problem than How to/Usability.

I closed the thread so you WOULDN'T get answers in that thread. Trying to follow answers to the same question, in two diffferent threads, makes for lack any continuity.

I am not sure what you are referring to when you say clear my proxy files. Please post step by step instructions for doing so.

In Videowave, Tools menu, Options, you will see a line that says proxy files, with option to change the location of where they are stored and with a clear button: click the clear button, click OK.

Relating to your main issue, if it proves not to be just the preview (follow sknis suggestions) as a test, you could try seeing if the problem clears if you slow speed up the first part less than to double speed: e.g. start with 1.5; if that works try 1.6, etc.

I have just tried splitting a clip, doubling speed of first part, halving that of second. No problems showing in preview in Videowave or in MyDVD, booth clips and the transition between them are smooth. As you see from my sig, I have radeon X800 GTO, so similar to yours.

Jean, thanks. You were right that it was only viewing. When I output file it ran fine. Thank you.

Clear your proxy files peridoically.

Please post your computer specs; it sounds like it just can't keep up.

The preview is low quality. Best bet is to take the project into MyDVD and output it to an ISO file. From there you can preview it in Disc Copier, mount a virtual drive to play it or copy it to a DVD RW. If you want to save some rerendering time, you could output that file to an mpgfile for DVD best quality. If it renders to the file OK then do the MyDVD bit. If it doesn't render, then look for some issue in VideoWave; perhaps even a ghost very small section of video.

Pentium 4 - 2 GHz, 512 MB DDR, Nvidia Gforce4 440. I am getting more RAM tomorrow. I don't intend to make a DVD out of this. I plan to post it on YouTube.

I don't think it's a hardware issue because in the same project, a similar file runs fine at 3.0 even. I am really baffled. Also the file that runs fine is earlier on timeline. The other reason I don't think it's hardware is that the file that doesn't work runs exactly the same each time I play that section of the timeline. If it was spec related I would expect it to be somewhat random.

The only difference I can think of in file that works and file that doesn't is maybe size of the files I am pulling from. I am splitting and only using very small segments of quite large .avi files.
