Please help. Space problem

McDesperate

Question

Hi guys, So i got Roxio with my new laptop and I tried burning a couple of dvds and it's working fine, but I noticed 1 thing, When I add a movie it takes a lot more space and I can't burn more than 2 or 3 videos. and those videos are 230 MB each and the dvd holds more than 4.7 GB. When i add the movie it takes 1.GB when it should've took 230 MB. Can anyone tell me why please? the file is wmv by the way.

Thank you.

To make a compliant DVD to play on standard players, highly compressed files such as wmv and divx, need to be uncompressed to make them compliant.

How do I uncompress them? And i've tried MPEG files, its the same, it takes more than double the normal space.

And I burned wmv files and they played fine on my player, but the problem is i can't burn the amount of files i want to burn.

Think in terms of length of time, not file size. You can get 1 hour of video on a standard 4.7GB DVD, in best quality.

I'm not really sure what you're even doing. If you want to take mpeg or avi files and turn them into a dvd that can be played on standard players, just use MyDVD. That will encode them to the correct format which can be burned to dvd. You don't have to do anything else to these files.

If you want to just copy these files to a dvd for viewing on a computer (but not a standard dvd player) you can use Creator Classic to copy these to dvd as a data disc. You will be able to fit more on a a disc but again, only play these on computer dvd drives.

grandpabruce, what if i wanted to burn a whole movie? A movie is no less than 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Beerman, I've successfully burned many dvds, My problem is when I add a movie it takes more than double the size. I added a 230 MB movie and it used 1.5 GB.

Call me crazy but i thought I can burn exactly 4.7 GB worth of data.

You might want to re-read the above answers to your question. Perhaps you missed one or more key points - like 1 hour of video on a single sided disc if you want to play it on a DVD player. If you are just copying wmv files, then there should be no change but you can play it on your computer only.

You can burn your 90 minute production/movie as an .iso file, in MyDVD, then burn it to a disc using Disc Copier, but you will see a video quality drop.

You aren't going to ever get 4.7GB worth of data, video file, or anything else on a 4.7GB DVD. The maximum that you will get on it is about 4.3GB.

Ok thanks guys for all your help, But how is possible not being able to burn more than 1 hour of video? I know alot of people that download movies, tv shows and all that and they can burn 'em easily. Is it some sort of error from the software?
And if they're burning multiple ones to discs to play them, then they are probably burning data discs and are using players that can play Divx files.

I got a divx dvd player and I can fit many movies on 1 dvd but it can only be played on a dvix player or computer. And, while the quality is good enough for me, it is not the same as dvd quality.

About the DivX thing, I read the thread here about how to fix the problem in EMC9, I did everything right and when i click change then repair in add/remove program, the installation works fine but after a while it says "rolling back action" and the whole thing stops. saying "the installation was interupted or something like that". I restarted my computer many times and its still the same. Any suggestions?
