Is windows xp Install Shield Engine required to install program

SandyS

Question

I don't know where else to ask this question, but my Install Shield Wizard has become corrupt and I can not install any new programs that use this program. Does roxio software's install program install independent of the Install Shield Wizard?

I'm running Windows Xp home and have tried everything to fix the install shield wizard short of reformatting the hd and starting fresh. I hope to avoid that for a while but If I purchase software that uses the wizard, I'm up a creek as I can't install.

You don't say whether you have any error messages, if so what, but there are fixes for common installshield problems at

http://consumer.installshield.com/common.asp?source=all

I have gone through all the steps on consumer.installshield.com and none have resolved the problem. Once you have completed their fixes and install shield still doesn't work, their suggestion is to contact the software vendor for the program your trying to install. Since the installshield engine is the problem, it has nothing to do with other vendors. I have tried to update ikernel.exe however installshield engine doesn't recognize that either and won't install.

The error message I get is: " The installshield Engine (iKernel.exe) could not be launched. Class not registered" ... I get the same error message with any install that requires the installshield engine.

My computer is a Sony Vio desktop, the OS WIndows XP home edition and OEM. I have tried to get help from Sony support but they just go through all the steps that I have already completed that didn't work. Their final suggestion is to format the HD and reinstall the OS. I called Microsoft and they don't support the operating system because it is OEM, so they just send me back to Sony.

Beerman suggestion I install Windows Installer, however that requires that I have Service Pack 2 installed, and I am still using SP 1. I didn't want to try to install SP2 and end up with more problems before I have this one fixed.

Basically, everybody just sends me to somebody else but nobody has been able to give me any advice on how to fix the problem. I did try to clean the registery to see if that would resolve the issue, I used Registery Smart. The 2nd line in the error message prior to running the RS was "no such interface supported" and after I ran the program that changed to "class not registered".

I have also tried to install a program in safemode but again it didn't recognize the installshield engine and I couldn't install. I would like to purchase the roxio suite but If it requires the installshield engine I would own the program and not be able to use it on my machine :(

I have also booted from a Windows XP Home disk and run repair ..... chkdsk /r .... some errors were found and corrected, however none resolved the installshield engine problem.

It seems logical to me there should be some way to fix this problem without having to loose everything on my hard drive and start over from scratch. Any suggestions?

I believe that EMC 9 requires SP2 being installed for full functionality.

Edit: It does.

I'm not how EMC works with the installer but if the installer is corrupt, you can download the Windowz installer.
