Widescreen still burning as 4:3

Question

I have an hour movie in DV AVI widescreen format (720x480px) that I cannot get to burn as widescreen in spite of trying everything I've read on this forum. When I open the file in MyDVD, it previews in widescreen just fine. But when I encode it, it the preview shows it as 4:3, and when I burn the iso file to disc, it plays back compressed to 4:3 format. I specified "high quality", 720x480 :( pixels, and 9Mb/S bitrate in the project settings. I am using ImageBurn to burn the disc.

I intend to shoot videos in widescreen format routinely, so it is important that I can burn DVD's in widescreen. Can anyone help me?

That is because there is really is no 'true' widescreen. ALL VIDEO DVDs are 720X480. To create widescreen, they squish the image into that resolution using 'non-square' pixels. The DVD player then knows how to unsquish the image to display it properly.

How are you playing the disc back? On the computer or TV/DVD player? If you are playing it back on a DVD player, make sure the DVD player is set correctly.

When playing back 16:9 video DVD on a 4:3 TV, the DVD player MUST BE SET TO LETTERBOX.

When playing back 16:9 video DVD on a 16:9 TV, the DVD player must be set to widescreen.

The Pan/Scan mode does not work with home burned DVDs.

I am playing it back on a TV with the DVD set for "letterbox". However, I tried the burning process again, and to my amazement, it plays back in letterbox. I don't think I did anything different, although it's possible that I previously let the program default to "fit to disc" instead of specifying the quality and video resolution. I don't see why that would matter, though.
