daiwe
I have Win2KPro SP4 & Creator 8 just installed after uninstalling Creator 5 Platinum. Attempting to use Classic Data Disk always results in a crash before trying to burn. Guaranteed to either crash or write a blank white screen if you access help. Closing the white screen then results in a crash. No library indicated, just "Creator 8 has generated an error & must be closed by windows. An error log is being created". Uninstalled & reinstalled Creator 8. Same problem. But, just to entertain me I guess, it sometimes opens and, after filling in the screen, it crashes with no action from me. There is more about parts of the display disappearing when I just move the mouse over them, but... BTW, I have the retail version with the downloaded 8.05 patch. The problem existed before the patch too. IF anyone hears from Roxio/Sonic, please post here.
Maruchela
The problem for me is that i'm not certain if all the entries in the registry with sonic or roxio should be removed. I have done a couple of registry hacks using registry mechanic and ccleaner. Registry mechanic finds over 600 items that could be repaired or removed and I removed almost all (except two) that had roxio or sonic on it, but some other items could not be removed with registry mechanic cause the demo will repair 6 areas of the registry and to do the entire registry, I would have to pay. However, I would manually follow the areas that registry mechanic would have referenced to sonic/roxio and I would remove directly through regedit, but with the last roxio instalation it did not fix the bugs. I have many of those HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT in ACTIVEX/COM that come up on registry mechanic, but I don't see that they have anything to do with roxio/sonic so I didn't delete those. Daiwe, I'm happy that you have found a solution, but frankly, to me this is somewhat confusing, cause I don't know for certain if whatever hacking I've done to the registry will help for the next emc8 installation. Also, the steps you've provided are not clear to me. Did you uninstall emc8 before running Regcleaner pro? I must be missing something... (oh yeah, my brain, Thanks roxio) Finally, why would having other software made by adaptec or roxio cause a conflict with emc8? And what about pkzip? Is that made by adaptec or roxio too? Multimedia software currently in my pc: WMP10, Realplayer10, Musicmatch9.0, moviemaker 2, paintshop photo album 4, paint shop pro 8, animation shop 3, photostudio 2000se, kodak easyshare, dvd decrypter and dvd shrink. My computer specs are on a link provided on prior post. PS: Never had photosuite or pkzip
Maruchela
Hey Daiwe, I was having the exact problem in creator classic as you have described. Uninstalling emc8 made my computer crashed horribly (locked on BSOD), and I had to spend an extra $80 to get it fixed. I didn't want to lose some files that I had not backed up prior to the crash, so I had no choice to pay to save my data instead of reformating the HD and reinstalling windows for free... I didn't even get a chance to try their backup utility, go figure The insane part of this experience was that I was going to try the program again, so I forgot to tell the computer guy to remove it after repairing my pc. However the second uninstallation did not cause my computer to crash again, but I did it after trying different programs and noticing that the reported bugs on this forum were happening to me too. But thanks to all the information and tests that you have done specifically with creator classic, that has made me definitely decide to return the program to the retailer I purchased. Not sure if they will at least give me store credit, but hope they will. Good luck with Roxio, and I hope you and others having these problems can get a solution soon. daiwe
Support replied to my ticket: run roxizap.exe They also warned that it might make any previously installed Adaptec or Roxio SW inoperable. Since Adaptec drivers are installed with Win2K pro, I wonder if they will be hit? Although Support made no mention of why I should zap roxi and said nothing about what to do after the system reboots, I presume this is guaranteed to wipe out everything previously installed before performing another new installation. Does anyone have more information / experience / WAGs about roxizap?
daiwe
... Why don't you call Tech Support and work 1-on-1 with a technician? ... Maruchela
Daiwe, I really appreciate so much you providing all your suggestions to help me and perhaps many others with these problems in emc8. To answer some of your questions, by the fourth installation of emc8, I already removed the preinstalled or oem versions of record now, sonic mydvd 5.3 le and sonic dla, meaning there were no other sonic programs. I followed your recomendations to uninstall/reinstall roxio plus the recomendations of tech support for searching through windows explorer. I was very thorough, I searched all windows explorer and removed almost all sonic/roxio folders except the installer files. I also made sure that I had no programs running in the taskbar while reinstalling emc8. Registry was backed up before hacking. From the registry, I had manually taken almost everything I found except for two sonic registry folders that were under hkeyclassesroot/installer/features/7cf... many number letters folder and hkeylocalmachine/software/classes/installer/features/7cf... many numbers letters folder, and when I ran the regcleaner pro, it did not detect those registries, so I left them in and regcleaner pro did not find any other roxio or sonic registries. I know how to do a custom install, however, your advice about testing each module for functionality is probably what I may not know how to do well and definitely too time consuming. I wouldn't know what to test in the modules i'm not familiar with. The ones I'm more familiar with are the mydvd8, record now and drag2disk. In testing drag2disk on the first installation, I noticed I couldn't append an open disk and that's how I ended up trying the creator classic and having the problems as described by you and others in these forums. I also experienced my media files modified dates getting changed by roxwatch on the first installation so I also followed several suggestions to partially correct that and on subsecuent installs, I made sure that certain functions of emc8 were disabled correctly to prevent those changes from reocurring. So the thought of doing an uninstall/reinstall for a fifth time, frankly I'm totally worn out. I bought this program a month ago and it's been mostly troubleshooting creator classic and reading these forums, and I haven't used it for dvd creation or backing up my data. So this is it for me. I'm taking it back for a refund. Again, thanks for all your help. Maru

Also, the steps you've provided are not clear to me. Did you uninstall emc8 before running Regcleaner pro? I must be missing something... (oh yeah, my brain, Thanks roxio) ... Uninstall Roxio EMC 8. Run roxizap. Manually search your disk for roxio and/or sonic directories. Remove them. (But leave Installer & Registered Packages alone. If you don't what these are, even better.) Download TweakNow RegCleaner Pro. BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY RegClean Pro reaches all levels if you set the FULL option before starting.I deleted everything that was safe to delete (probably missing files, ActiveX). Questionable items are up to you - If you don't know what they are, leave them. PKZip has nothing to do with Roxio. Just got carried away with being complete. The other Adaptec drivers may conflict with the current EMC 8. Looking at the history of this suite, it is an amalgam of products, developed by different companies, with a new umbrella interface. [Edit] I have upgraded to 8.05. No problems found with limited use.

daiwe
Removed Creator 8. Ran roxizap. Reinstalled Creator 8. Same problem. Opened creator classic; in data, clicked on directory to display files; after files displayed, slowly moved mouse over project types in the leftmost column. As the cursor touched the text, the text disappeared. After the "vaporizing touch" had emptied everything in the column, after a slight pause => Same error message and Dr. Watson. Feel free to post your suggestions or WAGs. Could I interest someone in trading a brand new Easy Media Creator 8 for your Creator 7 ??
daiwe
Progress Report Removed Creator 8. Ran roxizap. Ran a registry cleaner TweakNow RegCleaner STD.Does not clean as deep as the Pro, but it is free. Checked for directories left in Program Files, Common, and user directories.Found none today, but I did find several Roxio & Sonic directories after roxizap on 23 Feb. Cleaner found beaucoup (87) entries for Adaptec and Roxio, all identified as safe to remove (file does not exist). Installed Creator Classic only. No Crash Well, almost. Burned 300MB as a test, read help, and played with the app. It did lock up after dragging a directory entry from the left pane and then trying to delete the directory from the project. Finally got it to respond, but it soon crashed. I can live with that. I have not installed the upgrade to the retail version.

Maruchela
I know it seems strange that after I posted that I was going to definitely return the software, then I post some questions thus making me look like a nut I'm giving it a little more time; perhaps there is someone that can provide a working solution. Plus I'm still within my 90 day purchase period and the retailer will issue store credit. If no one can provide a remedy then I'll return it before my 90 days are over. Maruchela
I followed all the recommended steps as suggested by Daiwe plus removed Musicmatch 9.0 and installed 8.05 patch, and still no change. Parts of screen continue to disappear when moving mouse over screen items, then get error screen and creator shuts down. This happens mostly as I try to add files to my project and after importing the contents of an appendable disks. On prior occasions, I had the same problems even without adding files or importing disk content, meaning that if I just opened creator classic and moved the mouse around, the screen buttons and menu parts disappeared. I will contact roxio tech support to see if they have any more suggestions to correct this bug.
daiwe
And now, Back to the Future. I have not used CC since my last post. No new SW installed on system. Three old, small apps removed. Creator Classic now crashes every time, at various points before reaching write. Also sometimes does not paint process window correctly when initiated. Selected a directory rooted in C: from the left column. Scrolled to the bottom of the right column, individually selected and added six first-level subfolders to be written. Clicked Check Project Settings The same error message. A dump file of 70.953 MB with only Creator Classic running. Creator Classic again crashes every time, at various points before reaching write. Also sometimes does not paint process window correctly when initialized. Think I'll uninstall ECM8 tonight and replace my Corel Draw with version X3. Will look at the problem tomorrow when the light is better. That will increase the probability of locating that capacitor. [Edit] There were 5 directories, 8 Rox# temp files and a desktop icon left after roxizap restart. [Edit 2] RegCleaner found over 80 "safe to delete" entries, HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT in ACTIVEX/COM Section. [Edit 3] Ran RegCleaner again, about an hour after run in [Edit 2]. Found 14 Sonic entries. So maybe RegCleaner STD is limited for more than depth as compared to the Pro version. And perhaps roxizap does not work well with EMC 8?? I hope this journal of my travails will help someone.
daiwe
Genuine progress to report. I created an appendable disc with RecordNow Data earlier in the week. It had 6 tracks written TAO over a couple of days. I have now written as sixth track to that disc with Creator Classic. Everything described earlier in this journal no longer occurs. Since my last entry: I downloaded TweakNow RegCleaner Pro trial (one day). Set it to run FULL clean. Found some Adaptec & removed. While I was in there, I compressed the Registry. Manually searched the disc looking for anything possibly relevant. Found MGI PhotoSuite III SE. After verifying that Roxiio had indeed purchased MGI, I removed all traces of MGI. I also removed PKZip. To back up for a moment - all pieces of EMC 8 were installed individually with custom install, disc defragmented, and the program was tested to verify general functionality. Then another piece was added, etc. Today, using this same procedure, I added Disc Image Loader and then Creator Classic. Questions? Good. Saddle up! raykirkwood
Have given up on EMC8 completley as it is utterly unstable. I am using EMC7.5 with no problems for Creator Classic (my main use of the software). BUT I now find EMC7 will not work in 16:9 format with my video clips knowledge base says 'not supported! Have gone to Nero 7 which works like a dream in all departments I have tried so far, including lightning fast re-coding and burn of video to DVD Video. Pity - I had been with Roxio for many years. daiwe
Sorry you are still having problems. Just to clarify some suggestions, a little after-action session here. The problem for me is that i'm not certain if all the entries in the registry with sonic or roxio should be removed. ... Yes, they should be removed. What other Sonic/Roxio/Adaptec software is on your machine? Get RegCleaner Pro from my link above. It will clean all levels. Besides, you did back up your registry before you started.I followed all the recommended steps as suggested by Daiwe plus removed Musicmatch 9.0 and installed 8.05 patch, and still no change. Did you custom install the applications and test functionality? It takes longer, but will narrow the possible problem area(s).Start with a custom install and install everything except the following: Drag-to-Disc, PhotoSuite, Media Import, Media Manager, Audio Capture, Disc Image Loader, Creator Classic Then do a test run on each installed program to verify functionality. Add whatever parts you want to use. Add Creator Classic last, after all other parts seem to work properly. I did not update to 8.05 until after all parts of 8.0 that I installed were working. Now for the dead horse -- Did you find all Sonic & Roxio & Adaptec directories after you uninstalled? C drive, Program Files, Prog Files\Common Files, directories under each user (including all users & default user) Application Data? You may rename them rather than delete if you wish. Did you kill the network and any running applications each time you installed? Parts of screen continue to disappear when moving mouse over screen items, then get error screen and creator shuts down... Yep. I saw the same. Now, something about, uh, anything that does not kill you will make you stronger.

daiwe
I have had no trouble burning data with Record Now data. Or, for that matter, no trouble while "playing" with audio, video and slides. But I have not tried writing these to disk. I also have not installed Creator Classic, drag-to-disc, Media Import, Media Manager (& never shall) or Disc Image Loader. Just an FYI that mostly no problems with EMC 8.00 Note that I have not updated yet. I shall get back to Creator Classic before April.
