Trouble Burning downloaded movies

Jensen

Question

I recently bought a Mad Dog external dvd burner. It was bundled with Roxio EMC 9. There are several movies that I downloaded that have a red circle and line thru them. What is this?? I also have allot that I downloaded that can be accessed and burned. I chatted with a live person thru roxio contact page, they told to do a clean install and sent me on a lengthy process. I did all that was required and it still didn't work. Are these files encrypted and cannot be read by emc 9?? Any help would be appreciated..

P. S. These files can be burned by dragging them, but not as dvd format. Im trying to get them burned to watch thru a dvd player on my big tv.

Since I dont have the full version it wont due what I want, I looked into avi conerters and havent found a free one, if a full version does this automatically then I dont need to get one of each. I dont have that ver. of gspot. I think that might be the difference. I have 2.21, looked for the update on th link you posted didnt see it. Anywhase I rendered at the bottom, its seems to

video path: (S) --> AVI Splitter --> DivX Decoder Filter --> ®

audio:(S) --> AVI Splitter --> MPEG Layer-3 Decoder --> ®

I'm also trying th other suggestion as well with the how to file

Yes I can play it with Real player, wmp

p.s. I tried to add DivXDec.ax to system 32 with no success. I followed the steps got run this : regsvr32 /u c:\windows\system32\DivXDec.ax . I got a successful pop-up like it said I would, went to copy the folder but it wasnt there.... started looking fo the file where it said to copy to: c:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\9.0\DivX\ directory <- this also doesnt exist in my system. Did I miss something??

I think your problem is the version of EMC you have. The OEM version from MadDog. I don't know much about OEM versions except that they are basically free and that 'you get what you pay for' so I'm thinking, you're out of luck with this version. However, before you give up, contact MadDog and see what they can tell you. ogdens was correct, the tech person you spoke to should have caught that.

Solution found: Went to Videohelp.com and found a converter ( to -dvd) called DVD Flick. Its a free program and easy to use. From there I was able to convert the file. Roxio emc9 xe now recognizes the file and will burn it with all the options. I assume the oem wont convert the files...

Is it normal for a dvd format to be 5 x the size the original avi???

Thanks to all that helped

I'm sure something that came with your disc should have mentioned what that version was capable of and certainly Mad Dog should have been able to give you that info but I'm glad you got past that.

Files such as the avi you have are highly compressed and making them dvd compliant for use on standard dvd players requires some long encoding to the Mpeg2 format. This basically uncompresses the file which is why it is much larger.

I'd check my computer for viruses, addware, malware, etc.

I have been keeping up with the adware, spyware etc.

I just got off the phone with MD about the OEM. The gentleman said there was nothing he could do about this, and recomended me finding a avi-dvd converter, aswell as the rest of the formats. Which is weird, because Roxio is recognizing some of these files. What a trip.

You can try the trial version of EMC9 and see if it works for you.

Nice company! They offer the OEM version of Roxio but when you call about getting the full version, they suggest Nero?

"There are several movies that I downloaded that have a red circle and line thru them" Quote from first post.

Some things you can download and play but can't copy because of DRM :ninja:

and sometimes, not always but sometimes the "Ban" symbol on a file name means

DRM Protected and you can only play it and might not even be able to back it up,

also sometimes your download(s) can "Expire" (like renting a movie instead of buying it)

even though it would appear to be a purchase, from whatever download store.

and when the file "Expires" you can't even play it on the machine it was downloaded to

unless you pay for it again.

(Like the K-Tel guy coming to your house and asking if you have any "K-Tel" records

or tapes or 8-tracks and if you say yes I do, he says congrats you get the dubious

honour of paying for them again, or we take them away).

Hope you get it sorted out

Cheers

Do you know exactly what type of avi files these are? First make sure you have the proper codecs. Download Gspot and it will give you all the info you need.

If it's a divx problem, see this post for more info.

Check with Mad Dog, it is their OEM software.

You must have got a new employee at Roxio, they should have told you to contact the OEM for support.

Don't know what that's about! Can you play the file in any player on your system or with Gspot? It should tell you what codecs are needed for the file and if you have the required codecs already on your system.

the stuff that comes "Free" with your computer or hardware isn't really free it should be more correctly called

"Sponsor-Ware"

because it's there to sell you the PC or the parts, and it's almost always a "Limited Edition" of some sort

and it almost always has it's little "ads" promoting the "Upgrade" to the "full" retail version.

The Sponsor-Ware thing has many sides to it:

>on one hand the company is offering the stuff for a reduced price to the OEM of the PC

>on another hand the OEM gets to push it's brand because; "it comes with..."

>on another hand the company that offers it's product to OEMs gets "Exposure" to the public

>on another hand the company gets to participate in a type of shareware model by offering Reduced functionality products with the hope that the end user will go ahead and "Buy" the Full product all the while they didn't really lose any money by selling to OEM's for reduced prices

>on another hand a lot of people can get by with the "LE" type stuff, (I for instance have the Dell LE of "Sonic/Roxio Creator" and it's fine for what I need from the Laptop, I don't need the "Full" retail version, it's not a powerful enough machine to handle all of the extra "Goodies" that come w/EMC9, especially the video related stuff, it burns Data CD's/Data DVD's and CD Audio Disks, that's all it ever needs to do).

there's more to this but to get into all of it might require a full magazine / news paper article

Cheers
