Upgraded to 9 from 8, have a setting question now about .avi

kagsef

Question

I just upgraded from EMC 8 to EMC 9. I'd had 8 for about a year and had a lot of success. When I imported video from my Sony camcorder, the files were imported as .avi files (if I recall, that was the solution to my audio synching problems). But now in EMC 9, I can't see (or remember) how to set the capture as an .avi instead of an .mpg. Can someone PLEASE step me through the process?

Thanks so much!

Kathy

It's a Sony Handycam Digital 8. It's the same camera I was using with EMC 8. But in the drop down menu now with 9, it's not giving me an .avi option. I'm supposed to look under capture settings, right? It only lists DVD HQ, DVD LP, DVD SP, or VCD. Am I forgetting something?

Okay, so now my stupidity is REALLY showing. I see the place on my camcorder where that would go (it's labeled DV). Does the other end go into a USB on the computer? And is this a cable I might have somewhere or something I should go out and buy? Once I use that, will I get the .avi option?

Thank you so much for your help...

OH, I see the place on the back of the computer that matches your diagram. Now I KNOW I've never used that. Is that something I can get at Best Buy? Or do I need to go to the Sony store?

So maybe I spoke too soon. I just watched a DVD I burned, no editing, no menu. It was just a straight capture from my Sony digicam, using the firewire above, captured as an .avi file. On my computer all seemed right, but on the DVD, the audio isn't synching. I burned it at 4X speed. Any thoughts?

You need to purchase a firewire - 4 pin to 6 pin - cable. Yes, Media Import defaults to DV AVI when transferring video via firewire.

Firewire cables are sold just about anywhere. Even Walmart sells a good brand (Belkin) for about $39.99. Best Buy may be a little more than that.

Capturing via firewire is much easier , too, because the software can control the camcorder. After getting the cable, connect the camcorder to the PC. Turn the camcorder to the VCR or Playback mode. You should hear a sound from Windows recognizing the camcorder. Once you hear that, run Media Import 9. Click the Video Tab. The camcorder should be in the drop down list.

You can then control the camcorder by using the 'VCR type' button in the software: FF, rewind, play, etc. Make sure you select a folder before capturing. Media Import defaults to My Documents / My Video which usually works for most people. When you click 'Capture Now', the software will automatically start the camcorder and capture.

Sync problems are usually cured by doing two things.

1) Capture in short segments - 10 to 15 minutes each. Seems like you are OK on that. Sometimes making cuts in the captured AVI file in Video Wave every so often without cutting anything out will also help.

2) Encode to a ISO file. When you go to burn, select image file and de-select everything else. Name the file and select where you want it placed. After the encoding finishes, open Disc Copier and you can preview the file there to see if it is in sync. If it is, just copy that ISO to your DVD blank. If not, see "1" above.

If you are using MyDVD for the burn, under Tools/Options, change to Software below Render. Try the burn now, but burn to an image (ISO) file, instead of burning directly to disc. Then use Disc Copier to burn the .ISO file to a DVD.

Oh, thanks! Can you recommend a brand or something I should look for? The Belkins at Walmart range from $10 up, so I THOUGHT something might be fishy. Best Buy has a Geek Squad one for about $35, and Staples, I believe, has a Belkin for about that price too.

The Belkin, at Staples, should be good. Otherwise, you can get a Sony, if you have a store near you that has them.
