Dvd-r Dl Capabilities

Question

I realize this has been talked about before in a few threads, but no one ever really answered the question...does Disc Copier support burning to DVD-r Dual Layer discs?

I have a Sony DVD-RW DRU-810A drive which supports DVD-r DL discs...says so on the box, Roxio's own DVDInfo program says so, and I can even burn to DVD-r DL discs from within DVD Builder or in Creator Classic. However, when I try to burn a video compilation in DVD Copier I am not given the option of selecting DVD-r DL from the dropdown box (all I get are DVD-R, DVD+R, and DVD+R DL).

Ironically, it says right below the Destination Drive Select Dropdown that I have a "Blank Recordable Disc (DVD-R Dual Layer)" inserted in the drive.

So, I've got a drive that will burn them, the program recognizes the media type in the drive, but the Disc Size dropdown doesn't allow me the option of DVD-R DL and the "Burn Now" button stays grayed out (even when I switch the disc size to DVD-r).

Here's what Disc Copier says when i click Tools --> Disc & Device Utility:

Sony DVD RW DRU 810

--DVD-R Dual Layer, Blank Free Space 8.0 GB

----Disc Properties

------ Medium Type: DVD-R Dual Layer

------ DVD Book Type: DVD-R

------ Content Type: Blank

------ Disc Status: Blank or fully erased

------ Used Space: 0KB

------ Free Space: 8.0 GB

------ Disc Capacity: 8.0 GB

---- Drive Properties

------ Can write the following media types: ......DVD-R Dual Layer......

I left most of the stuff out (fingers getting tired) but you get the point...the hardware is there, its capable, the software program recognizes it correctly, but the stupid dropdown won't let me select DVD-R DL.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Were you able to fix it? Or will I just have to wait for the ever elusive 'update'???

Thanks

Well, the problem is actually occuring in both the CD & DVD Copy and the Video Compilation tabs. Regardless of the choice, I can't burn to DVD-r DL.

If I put a DVD-r DL disc in the drive, the Disc Size dropdown allows me to choose <DVD-R / DVD+R>, <DVD+R Double Layer>, and <DVD+RAM>....no DVD-R Double Layer is available. Regardless of the choice I make in the Disc Size dropdown, the Copy Now button is grayed out and I can't do anything.

Now, if I put a DVD-r in the drive I still get the same three choices in the Disc Size dropdown. The funny thing is, regardless of the selection I choose, the Copy Now button stays in focus and I can even select DVD+R Double Layer and click Copy Now and the program will start burning the 8GB project to DVD-R!!!

I've noticed that regardless of the media I put in the drive, the option for DVD-R Dual Layer is never present...I'm thinking that it just isn't possible to burn to DVD-R DL?

So what is the problem if it burns? The program apparently is NOT looking for a specific type of media. The drop-down list only tells the program the size that 'will be' available and has nothing to do with the 'type' of media inserted. DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL have the same amount of space. Just like the drop-down for DVD+R/-R. It doesn't matter as long as the drive recognizes the media correctly.

Ok, I see what your're saying with regards to the dropdown...i.e., it's just a size selector. But, the problem is that when a DVD-r Dual Layer disc is in the drive the Copy Now button is grayed out. Attached are three images, all were taken with a DVD-r DL disc in the drive and they show that the Copy Now button cannot be pushed.

When i said that the dvd burns when i set it to DVD+R Dual Layer, I had a 4.7GB regular DVD-r in the drive, not an 8GB Dual Layer disc!!!

But that isn't what you posted in the message above mine which I quoted. Thanks for clearing that up. DVD-R DL media was not available when this was in developement. I know that DVD-R DL is supported for data DVD discs. Perhaps will be added in a future patch.

Personally, I haven't tried any DL media yet becauase it's just too expensive. I haven't had any problem burning to DVD+ or -R single layer media.

Ok, that pretty much explains it.

I did come up with a workaround for anyone else trying to make Dual-Layer video projects. I went ahead and used Disc Copier to make a DVD+r DL ISO image and then used DVD Decrypter to burn the ISO image to DVD-r DL.

Not exactly the best way to do it, but it works nonetheless. Hopefully the program will be updated to include the -r DL support.

I am new to Creator 8. What is DVD Decrypter? I can't find it among the applications or in the index.
