Problem with Motion Picturers

Blaina

Question

Hello,

I've just bought Toast 8 and try as I may I cannot get Motion Pictures HD to export small jpeg file images in any movie format. Each time I export either to iMovie or Quicktime as slideshows I get the following error notice after the process has finished:

"Motion Pictures HD Exporting Problem

A problem occurred during exporting. It is described as '***QuickTime failure (-61,/Users/cmeyer/Developer/MP210LQCommon/LQMovieExport.m,line 350)'."

I'm running a G4/800 PowerBook with 25G free space on hard drive, 1GB RAM. HD optimised and directory maintained. (Also latest version of QuickTime). Thanks for any ideas?

It will not be posted on our software updates page until tomorrow, but this release has passed through testing.

Since everyone has been waiting patiently I've posted it in a temporary location for your use before it is available on our software updates page.

Changes:

- Resolves compatibility issues with QuickTime 7.2

Thank You, Patrick, for your quick response!

Do you think the fix will include or fix ver 1.0.4 as well?

Too early to say quite yet, I do know Motion Pictures HD (Toast 8) is included in the fix. We'll likely release outside of our normal Toast because of the effect this issue has on usage.

There are no plans for an update to Toast 6, sorry!

Ok, So if MP 1.0.4 is not to be fixed is it possible to have an option with MP HD to disable pictures in the menu in favor of file names for lower CPU, ram and video overhead to allow us older mac owners not to crash? .............Pretty please?

Don T

On Edit: I figured out that MP must not create it's own thumbs of the pics. If I import all the pics into iPhoto first then all is well. It must use the iPhoto thumbs in the menu and sorter. A bit of a drag cuz' I keep each project with all media on it's own external HD. iPhoto is a pain with it's own sort and store criteria and the library gets pretty cluster @#$!ed when working on more than one project. It is a doable work around though and I thank you profusely. :D

Sorry to be late getting back Don,

As I couldn't uninstall QT 7.2, I re-installed OSX 10.10 - but with QT version 7. Since then I have been able to create QT movies from jpegs in Motion Pictures HD 2.1.3. It probably helps to optimise HD and sort out directory beforehand?

Will try to bring it to the attention of Apple, but on past experience it's a bit of a Kafkaesque experience getting through to anyone with any influence!

Hello All,

OK, I have been testing MP HD ver 2.1.3 & 2.1.4t and my machine has been crashing. Not generating THE QT error but having random thread crashes. First thread 16 (2.1.4) then I rolled back to OSX 10.4.8 and QT 7.0.4 with MP 2.1.3 and have crashes this time threads 14, 12, & 13. When I upgrade to OSX 10.4.9 or 10.4.10 my audio editing software (DP 5.12) unexpectedly quits 6~8 times a day. Running OSX 10.4.8 QT 7.04 results in no crashes. I ran it for 2 weeks with no crashes before all this MP business started. I feel like I need 2 different machines to make all the software I use run. I resurrected my G3 B&W 900mhz running OSX 10.3.9 and MP 1.0.4. It's slow but it works. I think my crashes are related to available memory and the cache call/time trap (first line in the thread). When the Vmem gets too large (~7.5GB) the access time gets too long and exceeds the cache call wait cycle. Whichever thread is processing crashes at that point.

To work around I have to divide the slideshow into smaller parts and render them seperately. I then reassemble the pieces in FCP and lay in the audio. This has to be rendered for the final output.

Pretty discouraging,

Don T.

Seems like an extreme amount of work to do to get something to work. Not sure what having an older version of QT will do to other apps.

Hopfully this will be fixed in a more direct fashion.

Am glad its' working for you though.

I just bought this product yesterday. It does not work. It crashes, and the audio is screwed up. Is there any progress on fixing it? I am not happy.

If you just bought Motion Pictures as a Roxio download then ask for a refund. Instead use iMovie HD, Photo-to-Movie or Fotomagico for motion slide shows.

Well, Roxio, please stop sending me your weekly e.mail offering an upgrate to Toast 8. If it doesn't do what I want it to do there's no point in spending any more money with you.

You need to use the System Install disc to install the OS to your external hard drive. After that you can start up from that drive by selecting it with the Startup Disk panel in System Preferences. You can then do any System updates you want.

You may be able to run Motion Pictures from its existing location but I'd copy the entire Toast 6 folder from the existing Applications folder to the LaCie's Applications folder. You'll go through the Toast set-up steps again but your registration info should already be entered.

Better, but still doesn't work.

I did what you suggested. I installed Mac OS X on my external hardrive. Installed Toast on it. Everything looked good.

Started from the external hardrive and imported some photos, as well as a music file from itunes, from the internal hardrive on to Motion Pictures. This worked OK. I made the movie and saved it. Then sent it to Toast and begin burning.

It encoded fine. But when it started to burn I could hear the burner spinning, after an initial small change on the progress bar, it just sat and spinned for hours without change. Toast then refused to abort the operation. When I finally forced quit Toast, DVD player open and begin to play the movie but only part of it , (one slide) and it had no soundno sound. I checked the QT movie file and it has all of the slides but no sound either.

Any other ideas?java script:emoticon(':o',%20'smid_14')

Thanks

Well that must be frustrating. I think the disc burning problem can be solved if you choose Save as Disc Image from the Toast File menu and then burn the disc image using the Image File setting in the Copy window. Of course since you saved the Motion Pictures file you can also return to the System on your built-in hard drive for all the Toast actions.

The only reason I can think of that the Motion Pictures-saved Quicktime file doesn't have audio is if you used an iTunes Music Store download track for the audio. Apple's copy protection makes it impossible for any third-party applications to burn or export those tracks. If this is what you used the workaround is to burn the track to audio CD using iTunes and then import the track from the audio CD for use in Motion Pictures.

Thanks again. This has been one of the must frustraiting experiences I've had with a program, and all because of the QT update.

I did as you suggested and everything went well, sound and everything, until I get to burning.

I saved as disc image. and then tried to burn the disc image fro the copy window. It started, the progress bar started to move and the time showed 0:12 almast right away. 45 minutes later the progress bar sits there and ther is no change in the time. I hear the burner spinning but nothing seems to happen.

Hello,

I found a routine called "QuickTime_6.5.2_ReInstaller.dmg" (14.5MB) in the Apple discussion board somewhere. I forget where.

Hello,

Have you tried to render to a quicktime file and view it. If it too does not render all the pics then you are suffering the same problem as I. Have you looked at the crash logs?

Well I upgraded to Toast 8 just for this fix to Motion Pictures and guess what? It doesn't work!!! Still the same error. What's up Roxio?? I guess I'll just have to start looking for a permanent replacement.

You may be correct that your Ram is fine. But I had a defective Ram card that checked fine with TechTool but failed using the extended test from the Hardware Test disc. There also is an application called Memtest that some say does even better than the Hardware Test for Ram

Hello,

Memtest is the Apple osx routine that can be envoked via the console. Rember is an easy application GUI using that same routine. I ran it through several repeated test routines but to be sure I reran the tests twice today and 1.338GB of the upper ram checks OK. This is an extensive test that ran for several hours this morning. I do have to get back to work though.

This update does require Toast 8. We'll work with LQ Graphics to try and release a Toast 7 version of this update however I know it will be more than a week away.

:)

Since I am a Toast 7 user, I would like to know when this "fix" is available. Would you Post a link to the Fix on the Toast 7 Forum as well. TIA.

I believe this was caused by the QuickTime 7.2 update, we are working on an updater to resolve the issue.

Yes, you have to get the fix for MP if you have Quick time 7.02. I had the same issue and came to Roxio searched for fix's and found the newest update for MP.

Thank you for your response.

I have been very impressed with the quick attention to this problem.

Any suggestions for those of us using older Macs (ibook 500MHz G3)?

Toast 7 is no longer available and 8 does not work with G3.

Once again thank you for your help.

In your case the key is not to update to QuickTime 7.2 or to have a second startup drive (such as a Firewire hard drive) that hasn't been updated to QuickTime 7.2. I typically keep an older version of the OS on a Firewire hard drive which I can start up from when troubleshooting, anyway.

Maybe the problem will be fixed with later updates to QuickTime or maybe not.

There is a file on your system drive called "logs". In it you will find all the usual stuff like the installer log, OS update log, crash log and panic log.
