Roxio EMC 9 Locks up system

workerbee777

Question

Hi - I've got about 14 hours in this so far - I hope someone can advise.

When I try to burn a CD or DVD, using Creator Classic, or My DVD, my whole computer locks up upon pressing the Burn button. Once my system is locked up, I cannot even get an Windows Exporer window or a Firefox window to open up, in fact I must warm boot the machine by holding in the start button to get past the lockup.

My OS is Windows XP home edition 2002 Service Pack 2

Video is Nvidia Geforce 7600 GS

Video Driver is 6.14.10.9371 - freshly uninstalled and reinstalled lastest version

I have applied the latest firmware for my CD/DVDW by TSSTcorp (TS-H552L, revision 0614)

DMA is enabled

I am using the correct, clean media (CD-R, DVD-R)

I have updated to the latest PX Engine.

I have tried uninstalling the CDDVDW drivers and then allow the system to reinstall them (so I have not hunted these down by hand yet).

I have tried uninstalling Roxio 9, rebooting, and reinstalling it.

Roxio had worked fine for several months, but stopped working about a month ago - I am not sure what I've done to cause conflict, as I have not added any notable software since then. I have been forced recently to use a mobile-phone modem as my local broadband provider has been very slow to provide services. Other than that there is not a lot of software that is new.

Roxio suggested that I also disable some startup items, so I disabled all of them, and made sure my virus check was turned off when I reinstalled the most recent time.

Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions on this!

Brad

I thought I had replied but my connection has been playing up on me so it must have vanished

Anyway - you said you hadn't installed any 'notable' stuff but that Roxio stopped working. Check back to anything that may have been installed round that particular time and uninstall (in stages, one item at a time, even MS updates in case one of those caused thew problem). You can re-install once you pin down just what did cause it.

IE7 and/or WMP11 are possible (they normally don't cause problems on EMC9 but there have been some instances where problems have been reported)

Also - installing another CD program if it includes packet-writing software (such as Nero InCD) will clash with Drag to Disc.

Try also (if you're running XP) going to start, run and type in msconfig. Clear the ticks at RoxWatch9.exe and anything relating to media watch or drag to disc, reboot, tell the nag screen that appears, yes, you know you disabled startup items and please don't tell me again.

btw - when I was last in Dublin (back in December) there were more signs in Polish than in Irish

Thanks again for the tips, gi -

I'm on IE 6, and I uninstalled WMP11, which rolled WMP back to 10, which looks to be in a "ready to install" form. Still Roxio locks and forces a warm boot.

But your advice got me thinking, we all need to be keeping diaries that note when and what we installed or uninstalled. That could make these diagnostics so much smoother. I think I allowed Firefox to install a newer version somewhere in the last month, so I will look into that next. Also there are some apps that may have to be uninstalled because I am not sure of the timing and I guess I will have to try everything.

All of this makes me a little angry that Roxio is such an intrusive, troublesome program. The guys designing and building this monster just seem to have no sense of restraint. Everyone thinks their software is the one that we just cannot live without. It is a trend these days that your software needs to do 101 things instead of 10 things, and you have to branch out into every imaginable application. Corporate, self-obsessed, greedy madness. Growth and expansion at any cost.

Probably reminds you of what's happening in Dublin!

Couple of questions: what is your CPU and speed and how much RAM do you have? Also, did you remember to turn off the Anti-Virus before installing?

Latest drivers from nVidia btw are 162.18 (see here)

Also, did youi download and install the latest DirectX 9.0c from Microsoft? This doesn't come in with the normal updating but must be manually downloaded

Thanks for the reply -

My machine:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core

4200+ MHz

2 G Ram

DirectX 9.0c

I have updated the graphics driver to 6.14.11.6218, but it has not fixed the issue.

I have also performed a clean install per the steps Roxio suggests, to no avail.

And I did take care to turn off anti-virus before installing.

Any other ideas? I am going on something like 17 hours in the past two days now.

Thanks - (btw I was just in Dublin - really loved going to a foreign country where they can speak english well, considering I am now living in Sweden).
