mpeg-2 playback in WMP

uncle mot

Question

I have taken home video of my family over the last two years on a mini-dvd Sony Handycam. Using Roxio, I took one of the mini-dvds and ripped it onto my computer as an mpeg-2 file. I am using these mpeg-2 files to edit the videos with Videowave (I have EMC 9, Vista Home Premium OS, Dell Inspiron 1520 about 3 weeks old). I am editing the mpeg-2 files because editing with the .vob files always causes EMC/Videowave to lock up on my computer.

Anyway, when I open these mpeg files in Videowave and play them back I have audio. When I open them up with Windows Media Player 11.xxx (whatever the most recent version is) I have no audio. My computer shows that I have the Sonic Cineplayer Decoder Pack, which I understood was to give me mpeg playback ability. Am I wrong about this? Or, do I have another codec issue (or some other issue) I am not aware of?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Wmplayer does not automatically have ac3 playback capabilities, but uses a decoder installed on your system. The easiest solution by far is to use other player software, like Power DVD (made by Cyberlink which also makes the Media Experience in EMC9). It is possible to use decoders like AC3 filter, but, you can run into problems: you can't guarantee which ac3 decoder wmplayer or windows itself is going to use when you have more than one of them installed, and many ac3 decoders included in other software will only read ac3 off of a DVD -- not your hard drive. Some players do not rely on what's installed in windows, but use their own, built-in decoders, and avoid potential problems.

mpeg audio was pretty common, but I've seen problems using it with some DVD software and some players, including stand-alone or set top boxes. If you have control over where it will be played and don't need maximum portability, there's nothing wrong with it at all.

same problem here, I also use the tv/vcr setting. Thanks for the quality reassurance. I was not sure if it was the same. If I want to play the dvd presetting burn I use nero it has the ac3 sound capability.

Having the same issue here. I use the tv/vcr selection and it codes the sound to mpeg1 instead of ac3. This gives use about the same quality and works in wmp 11

Hum, that codec did the trick, thanks mucho
