Slow Verification

bbstenor

Question

I just recently bought and installed a Samsung SH-S182M (18x DVD DL, firmware SB04) drive mechanism into a Pioneer DVR-S706 (8x DVD) case, connected with FireWire 400. The drive works fine burning CDs.

I'm trying to burn a data backup of my iTunes folders (21GB, estimated 5 DVDs) with Toast 8.0.1. I'm using Fujifilm 8x DVD-Rs, and Toast reports that the current and average write speed is 4x to 5x. However, when the verification process starts, it is excruciatingly slow. Much slower than the burn time. One verification stalled out at 90%. I force quit Toast, and checked the DVD, and it appeared that everything is there.

What could be causing slow verification times?

I have a 1.83GHz MacBook Pro, 2GB RAM, 160GB 7200rpm hard drive, OS X 10.4.10.
