Question

I am currently trialling EMC9 with a view to purchasing and then converting all my old camcorder tapes to DVD. As I don't have a capture card I have tried attaching my old Hi8 camcorder to my Panasonic DVD recorder and first copying each tape to a separate DVD. I then use the Capture/Import feature to get the whole tape into EMC9 as a single file. This works but is a bit laborious as it seems I have to go through the whole file eg a 90min piece of video, to split it into separate clips which I can then turn into separate chapters. I don't know if this is the most efficient approach but it works. I've tried scene detection but whilst this creates chapters it doesn't appear to create DVD menus for me although this might be because I have found out how to do this yet!

My real problem is this :- I recently bought a Sony DVD Camcorder for this years summer holiday and I used the utility that came with the camcorder to transfer the (finalised) DVDs to my PC Hard disk. This has resulted in a couple of dozen MPG files which play perfectly when I open them on the PC (through Media Player). However if I try to add them to a Project using Add New Movie button I get an error saying that the movie clip can't be edited so it can't be added to the project! I have also tried attaching my Camcorder directly to the PC with the supplied USB cable but the camcorder isn't recognised so I can't use the Capture/Import to capture clips and get them in this way either. How can I get these clips into EMC? Presumably I could attach my new DVD camcorder to my Panasonic DVD Recorder and copy the DVDs to a new DVD and then put that in the PC but this seems a ridiculously long way around. Surely I should be able to put the capture the movies directly from either the camcoder or the DVDs it writes to (otherwise it seems pointless having a DVD camcorde which I bought for ease of transfer!!

Can anyone help??

Finally managed to get this to work but laborious. I have found that if I put the mini DVD in my PC (after finalising of course) I can use the Capture/Import function to import the MPG files into EMC9. HOWEVER, the program never completes importing all the chapters on the DVD (even though I have selected them all) so if , for example, I have 6 chapters on the DVD I can end up with 6 MPG files on my hard disk but the last 4 are showing as 0 bytes and can't be accessed. I therefore have to go through selecting and importing each chapter individually and this works (but WHY can't I select all chapters; press a button and walk away and leave the program to import them all in one go. This is a bit of a pain!!!

You are better off copying the folders, from the miniDVD, to your hard drive, open VideoWave, browse to those folders, and add the .vob's to your production.

You will only need to click on the Video_TS folder, and VideoWave should prompt you to bring in one, or more of the .vob's.

It must be something to do with the format Sony uses because I can't see any VOBs on the disc to copy to my hard drive! If I browse the DVD through Explorer all I see is a DVD_RTAV folder and in here is a single file with an extension of VRO which can't be opened. I either have to use the Sony utility that came with the Camcorder to extract from this file (but this leaves me with MPGs on the hard disk that can't be imported!) or I import directly from the DVD by putting it in my PC disk drive (which is what I'm doing and why I'm having the problems).
