Cannot Select Drive's Max Cd-r Speed (emc 7.5, Creator Classic)

Question

Hi,

I have 3 external drives connected to my PC via firewire. Two of these drives (BenQ DW1655 and LG GSA-4166B) have a maximum CD-R buring speed of 48X which can be selected in the Creator Classic burn window. However my 3rd drive (Sony DRX-810UL, aka: DRU-810A) has a maximum speed of 40X but the fastest I can select is 32X. The UI "shows" 40X but this changes to 32X as soon as I insert blank media. This only seems to happens with Roxio. Other burning apps allow 40X on this drive with no problem. No question my CD-R media is rated at 52X so I can't understand why the 40X setting isn't avilable. Any comments appreciated :-)

Roxio communicates with your drive to see the max speed that it will do a good burn. You should try to udpate the firmware for that Sony unit if you already haven't. Most people will not burn at max but at a little less than max. Unless you are making an awful lot of discs, the 32X to the 40X is not a lot of time difference compared to trying to assure that you have a good burn. This is really important for any video work.

The Sony site for finding the firmware updates is

http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/firmware.htm

Make sure that you select the correct firmware and that you follow the instructions exactly. Make sure you remove Roxio's Drag 2 Disc and any other packet writing programs now on your computer. (This is in your instructions but they don't mention D2D)

Thanks for the quick reply sknis. Since switching my drives from USB2 to firewire 400 I've seen a dramatic improvement in burn quality at max speed with both DVD-R and CD-R but your point is well taken. Even though my CD-DVD Speed quality scans have been excellent I often knock my burning speed down a notch or two just to play it safe. As for firmware, I'm using the latest version.

I was concerned that something was wrong but from what you've said, when EMC probes the firmware it's receiving the intended response, 32X in this case.

Thanks again :-)
