Small puzzle on record/playback, not related to any product

Here is a small puzzle on a show I recorded to my DVR. This is a new DVR compared to what I have used in the past, but how I am using it is the same.

I recorded a show from the History channel. It was shown in 16x9 on a 4x3 screen. Bars top and bottom of the 4x3.

I then played it and recorded it on a DVD. When played from the DVD on the recorder, it shows the same aspect. 16x9 on a 4x3 screen, bars top and bottom.

I then copied it to my PC and played it using multiple players. They all show a 4x3 within a 4x3 with bars top, bottom and both sides.

When doing this in the past, I had no problems.

Am I running into a DRM issue or something else? So far I have found no setting anywhere that could explain the issue, even tried different settings when I recorded to DVD. My next try is to record the same show again on the DVR with any settings I can find that would possibly make the difference. Problem is, when I play it on the DVD recorder or DVR, everything is as it should be.

I would find it odd that DRM would cause that especially in XP. Got to be some small setting somewhere that was overlooked. I've got nothing on this one.

What happens if you switch to full screen? I think it would just have bars top and bottom. at least that's what I've experienced with, say WMP or PowerDVD.

Got it to work, but I don't know why it does. My TV is 16x9, DVD recorder will handle any, and I had my DVR set to a 16x9 TV. I set the DVR to say my TV is 4x3. When I play it through the DVD recorder, it shows on my TV in 16x9, no bars on the side. When I play the recorded DVD on my PC, now it shows 16x9. When I looked at the previously recorded stuff, all the picture was there, but it was squeezing the 16x9 (that was within the 4x3) to 4x3. Even though when it played on the recorder it was 16x9 within a 4x3.

So long story short, when I want to watch TV, I have to set the aspect to 16x9. When I want to record, I have to set the aspect to 4x3.

Haven't tried to record a show that is true 16x9 yet, will have to see what happens with that.
