DVD video hangs up every few seconds

damage04

Question

I just bought an internal pioneer 18x double layer dvd rw drive. I have it installed in my G4 Mac. I ripped video and audio off of a concert DVD. I didnt rip the entire performance, i just selected one chapter (song) to test out my burner. I then burnt it to a dvd using toast 7 two ways. 1st way was using the video tab. The other was using the data tab with dvd-rom udf selected. The only one that will play in my dvd player or on my computer was the one from the video tab. however when i play it in my dvd player, the audio and video is very choppy, and if i play it in my computer, the audio is fine, the video is smoother but seems to hang up on a frame every 15 - 20 seconds. Is there anyway to fix this, or is there something i should be doing differently. Any help is appreciated.

*note: all files were burnt using NTSC format

thanks alot

The way to use Toast with the content of a VIDEO_TS folder is to be certain the VIDEO_TS folder is not missing any of its original content (i.e. full disc extraction) and then place the VIDEO_TS folder directly on the desktop or in the Movies folder (not inside any other folder). Choose DVD with the Toast Media Browser. The browser then can be used to access individual titles or chapters within the VIDEO_TS folder.

Select DVD video as the format in the Video window. Drag the titles or chapters you want from the browser to the Video window. Toast extracts the MPEG files from the VIDEO_TS folder and writes them to the Roxio Converted Items folder.

When that is finished you can prepare the menu the way you want and burn your new video DVD.

I made a couple edits in your post because it isn't okay to discuss ripping copy protection from commercial DVDs in the Roxio forums.

Non-encrypted DVDs can be read by Toast without having to first rip them to your hard drive. Just insert the DVD and it will appear in the browser when DVD is selected with the top button.

The key is to use the media browser to extract the MPEGs from the video DVD or VIDEO_TS rather than dragging VOBs from those sources into the Video window.

Popcorn 3 lets you access the content of VIDEO_TS folders and non-encrypted DVDs for exporting or reauthoring to a new DVD without using the Media Browser to extract the MPEGs. That's a nice time-saver. You still need to use Popcorn's media browser to extract MPEGs if you want just chapters rather than entire titles, however.

Sorry but i am very confused as i cannot get this to work. I have ripped the performance of the song onto my desktop. is this right or wrong. do i have to rip the entire content of the disk to my computer then, select the chapter (song) i want to burn? And when i go to burn it, how do i go about doing it. do I use video and then the dvd-video slection or dvd-video from VIDEO_TS? when ever i try and use the dvd-video from VIDEO_TS, it says that it isnt a valid VIDEO_TS folder, it cannot be selected. Or should i be burning the video under the data tab, and using DVD-ROM UDF? other forums said to use the UDF selection under the data tab, but that wont play in my dvd players or my computer. I'm usually not this bad at this stuff, but i could use a step by step guide on how to do it, or an explanation what i need to do differently to get it to work. I can burn the performance onto a dvd, its just the audio, or video is choppy, or just doesnt play. and i've tried about 5 different dvd players.

Thanks

It shouldn't be this complicated, but it is.

In order for a video DVD to play in a DVD player the video must be "authored" in a VIDEO_TS folder. That's what Toast does when you select DVD video as the format in the Video window. Do not use the DVD-ROM (UDF) setting when you need to author a video DVD.

Toast is not designed to work with VOB files in the Video window. Sometimes it can work but most of the time it does not. That is why it is important to use the Media Browser to extract what you want from a VIDEO_TS folder. However, in order for the Media Browser to describe and access the VIDEO_TS folder's contents the folder must be complete. In other words there cannot be anything deleted from the source VIDEO_TS folder. Otherwise the .IFO file in the folder will be pointing to content that isn't there. So you need to do a full disc extraction if you want the Media Browser to work properly. After ripping the VIDEO_TS folder to your hard drive drag the VIDEO_TS folder itself onto the desktop. Now the Media Browser will see it when you choose DVD with the browser's top button.

Once you're this far you can use the browser to access individual titles or chapters within the VIDEO_TS folder. Since you just want certain songs you probably just want certain chapters. Select them in the browser window and add them to the Video window. Toast takes a few minutes to extract the MPEG video files from the VOBs. These files are written to the Roxio Converted Items folder. Toast's default is to automatically empty this folder when you quit Toast. If you don't want that to happen you can change this in Toast Preferences.

With the extracted videos displayed in the Video window you can now choose the thumbnail image that appears in the menu. Click on the thumbnail and a slider appears. Drag the slider to a frame that you want for the menu. Also edit the text for the menu. You can change to a different menu design, set if you want the DVD to automatically start playback or start by going to the menu, and set if you want the video to continuously play from one title to the next or if you want it to return to the menu after playing each title.

As I stated before, the key is to use the media browser to add content from a VIDEO_TS folder or a video DVD to the Video window when you want to export those clips to other formats or to author a new video DVD.

Adding to the confusion there are times when you might want to use the DVD video from VIDEO_TS setting in the Video window. Again you must start with a complete VIDEO_TS folder. Then choose DVD video from VIDEO_TS as your format and select the VIDEO_TS folder. An options button appears that gives you access to a window where you can choose what titles you want to include in your new DVD. You cannot choose individual chapters this way. You also won't have a menu if you choose anything other than the full VIDEO_TS folder's contents.
