Popcorn vs Toast 8

terryzx

Question

I had thought that Toast incorporated Popcorn from the previous versions and I had thought that all that it did was now built into the new Toast 8

Can someone tell me the reason I would want Popcorn if I already have Toast 8?

Thanx In Advance!!!

Oh well, it will probably turn out to be the same cycle as before. Meaning instead of an update to Toast 8 we will see Toast 9 appear in a couple of months, doing all Popcorn 3 does and a wee bit more.

Happened twice before, so this time I'm thinking about skipping Popcorn 3...

Have fun, Hermie

That is the same thing I was thinking.

Popcorn 1(own), Toast 7(own), Popcorn 2(own), Toast 8(own), Popcorn 3 (NOT GOING FOR IT THIS TIME), Toast 9?

It doesn't bother me when Roxio keeps upgrading Popcorn to do a few things not yet in Toast. I think the best reason not to upgrade to Popcorn 3 is you just don't need it because Toast 8 is good enough.

As more features get added to either Popcorn or Toast there are fewer users who really need those incrementally better features. Popcorn 3 is ideal for owners of El Gato's Turbo.264, but how many users own or need a Turbo.264? I think a Turbo.264 is essential for owners of AppleTV. How many own an AppleTV?

The ability to pause encodings and to create preview clips to evaluate encoding settings is nice if you do a lot of video encoding.

Merging content from multiple DVDs or VIDEO_TS folders and batch processing are conveniences for those who do a lot of this.

If someone doesn't have Toast 7 or 8 then upgrading from Popcorn 2 to Popcorn 3 is a tremendous bargain and a no-brainer because of its added ability to author video DVDs (with AC3 audio) from multiple video sources.

I'm the type who typically upgrades to the latest versions of software I use (I quickly bought iLife 08, iWork 08 and Photoshop CS3) because I want every available convenience and feature. What I want most from additional features are ways to do my work with less time and effort. Popcorn 3 does that in enough ways to please me. I smiled the first time I used Popcorn 3.

It doesn't bother me if Roxio uses their Popcorn 3 sales in part to do even better with Toast 9 some day. Let the circle continue.
