Medium Error When Burning Disc!

roxstarr

Question

I am a user of MacBook with Mac OS X v10.4.10 and I have Toast Titanium 8.01. I have been trying to burn data and MP3 discs with both CD-R and DVD-R but I get these error messages all the time! My MacBook is only 3 months old.

The drive reported an error:

Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR

Sense Code = 0x0C

WRITE ERROR

I get similar message when I use iTunes to burn MP3. It says ".....medium error" too.

Any MacBook users out there having the same problem?? It's driving me nuts! I have tried lowering the burn speed to 4x and 2x but Toast still burns them at 10x ! The CD-R that I use has 52x max speed capability.

Please advise! Thanks!

this does not help at all cuz i'm not @ my own computer right now, but my imacG5 is the first version, and my firmware is fine. i know that the dvd-write is the same as the one quoted below. surely one should have one's system upgrades current, i agree. other than that, i've got no advice for anyone. i have yet to get a pack of Imation discs, but i will bet that that may be the only brand which will work for dvd's now. but when i DO get some i will post back in this forum. notice that the last two firmware versions posted here are different.

My suggestion to Jeff0628 to download and apply the combined system update isn't just so the system software is current. It's not uncommon for odd problems to occur after doing an incremental system update that can be fixed by applying the combined system updater on top of the existing system, even if they are the same version (e.g. OS 10.4.10). I consider the drive suddenly not showing support for DVD+R or DVD+R DL media or showing any disc cache to be an odd problem which could be OS related rather than drive related.

Sorry if this is a sidetrack from the issue you have not been able to resolve.

Odd. Here's how that same drive is described on my G5 iMac. The firmware is different but my guess is that yours in more recent. Also yours has lost it cache. I suggest downloading and apply Apple's combined system update for your system to see if that fixes this problem.

I'm having the same issue as stated in this thread. I'm currently using Imation DVD+R 16x single layer disc's. I agree that this isn't the best brand, but I havent had any issues with this spindle either (about 3/4 used). I decided to check my firmware and noticed that +R is not listed in the DVD-Write section. Has a recent firmware upgrade taken away this capability?? As it shows below it only supports -R -RW. ANY IDEAS????

Well, as I pointed out, I'm working off the same spindle that used to work, and still does on my other machine, and still does with iDVD. And the fact that the Apple forums have the same complaints lends some credibility to the fact that something has changed to start causing these failures.

I have all updates and I don't have a problem burning DVDs with Toast 8.0.1.

I have found the answer is usually media related in other forums that I frequent.

I will tell you the same thing. Taiyo Yuden -R SL and Verbatim +R DL are the only media that I use.

i am fully with you. the last time i bought a pack of dvd's, though, all they had was memorex. i mean all they had that would work with my g5 and my burner. verbatim is awesome, i love it, and for some inexplicable reason i may now be even more limited in the name brand of media that i may use. tdk dvd never worked. i have ALWAYS relied on memorex and verbatim.

but if you will notice in my earlier ramblings, i mentioned that these memorex had always worked fine before. in fact, well over half of the one hundred pack has been used successfully with no problem whatsoever. so my point is that something has changed very recently which allows toast to only burn to dvd. my question is what's the deal and can we fix it?

i could start a new topic if people are confused or if it would make life easier. your response just seems random and thoughtless.

i have got to go somewhere special to get verbatim dvdr+, and most of the time the store is out because they are the only retail store who carries them.

so my goal is NOT to sacrifice the intended capabities of my machine by dropping my shoulders and going with whatever works (given the far-fetched notion that a different brand of disc would pose no problem for my machine. for all i know, i would be wasting my money on logos).

my goal is to find out why my beloved g5 is not doing what it should.

get it?

crap. found a log of updates. this is all i've gotten since 09/12:

2007-10-06 16:06:23 -0700: Installed "Keynote Update" (4.0.1)

2007-10-06 16:07:38 -0700: Installed "Pages Update" (3.0.1)

2007-10-06 16:08:48 -0700: Installed "Numbers Update" (1.0.1)

2007-10-06 16:09:29 -0700: Installed "Pro Application Support" (4.0.2)

2007-10-06 16:15:03 -0700: Installed "iPhoto Update" (7.1)

2007-10-06 16:16:48 -0700: Installed "Compatibility Update for QuickTime 7.2" (1.0)

2007-10-06 16:18:12 -0700: Installed "iLife Support" (8.1)

2007-10-06 16:23:36 -0700: Installed "iTunes" (7.4.2)

quicktime and itunes have been pissing me off for some time. quicktime requires a slew of codecs which seem to work best when arranged in just such a way, like tuning in a television with an antenna.

and itunes just keeps adding more and more crappy features that i don't want. i don't want any itunes store, and if itunes can play video now, how does that affect quicktime, or vice versa.

i am re-installing itunes back to 6.5. i was much happier then.

great! i'm glad you have those logs. i must have disabled logging in one of my many attempts at freeing up cpu speed and storage space.

cuz i think that you are narrowing it down. i can burn cd's using toast, just not dvd's. and the last dvd i burned was dated 09/12/07. and i will bet anything that that was the slew of updates that i just ran the other night while i was distracted.

that's it. it's one of those released since 09/12/07.

nice work, tew.

now how do we get out of it?

Well, I turned to the Apple forums and see that this has been a general problem going back to mid to late July. People are reporting various burn problems for CDs and DVDs. I don't remember exactly when my problems started happening, but I think it has been within the past month. Looking at the software update log, the SuperDrive Firmware Update 2.1 end of June would certainly be suspect, but it has definitely worked since then. I see Pro Application Support 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 Aug 19 and Sep 12, iTunes 7.3.2 (which some in the forums were blaming) on 8/19, Security Update 2007-007, Audio Update 2007-001 and QuickTime 7.2 all on 9/13.

So, it doesn't appear to be a Toast problem per se, but as I mentioned, Toast is the only one I'm seeing exhibiting the problem.

ok, so completely uninstalling my toast version 8.0.1(137)

and reinstalling the original 8.0 did not seem to make any difference. i even restarted. so next i will update to 8.0(112) and if that doesn't work i will reinstall the whole thing to version 8.0.1. cuz i know that build 137 was not working to begin with.

Are you on 10.4.10?

And, yes, my CDs all work fine also (so far). Although, now that I think about it, I haven't Toast'd any, only iTunes.

hmm. yes, 4.10. and like an idiot i have no idea when i upgraded the system. i was distracted the other day when i saw like a half dozen or eight updates and i just hit go. i'm trying to find a log...when was this update released...i normally am more conscious about waiting on system upgrades (we've all been through this one before. wait for the bugs to settle down. even with minor system upgrades like this).

wait.

it cannot be the operating system upgrade. the 10.4.10 was released way back in june and my personal receipt for that installer package is dated mid july.

my own toast dvd problem is much newer than that.

SO.

FOR ME, AT LEAST,

I AM RULING OUT THE SYSTEM UPGRADE.

I CANNOT SPEAK FOR ANYONE ELSE HAVING THIS PROBLEM.

crap. i screwed something up. i am going to uninstall toast only, and then fully re-install WITHOUT ANY TOAST UPGRADES BEYOND 8.0.

i may have screwed up my toast upgrade (i don't want to talk about it. different build..." so it may be my fault.

BUT HAS ANYONE HAD ANY SIGNIFICANT PROBLEMS WITH UPGRADES ABOVE 8.0?

i could search through the forums, but i am already writing this right now. new topic?

it's late, i gotta do this.

yep. something is wrong, alright. memorex dvd's have always worked w/ my g5, and all of a sudden i cannot write data onto them using toast.

...

however, the old tdk cd's seem to work as well as ever.

I've been having the same problems over the past couple months. I'm not buying the "bad media" suggestions that are being offered as I have been working on a spindle of name brand DVDs for awhile with no problems. I have no problems with iDVD (haven't tried DVD Studio Pro yet because I haven't worked on a major project that needed it lately).

I tried using a 7.x version of Toast I still have on this drive, but still get the same MEDIUM ERROR. Luckily, the DVDs are not destroyed in the process and I have been working around the problem by copying the disk images over to another computer for burning.

My guess is that 10.4.10 broke it. That seems to be the only variable in this equation that has changed recently. The older computer is 10.3.9 and has no problem.

The exact same error message is happening to me now, except this is media that I have been using for some time, and never had a problem with in the past. This seems to be a recent error that has cropped up.

I am using a Power Mac G5 Dual 2.7 with a 12x Superdrive. My media is 4x media, and I have never had an issue with it before, but it just doesn't right now, but burns fine from within DVD Studio Pro.

Those errors usually are due to poor-quality media or media that isn't well supported by the drive's firmware. I suggest trying a different brand of media. I have good success with Verbatim discs. Memorex has a pretty poor reputation for media quality.

After inserting the blank media the button in Toast that sets the recording speeds will show what speeds are supported by that drive to that specific media. This info comes from the drive.

Sometimes it helps to choose Save as Disc Image from the Toast File menu instead of clicking the burn button. Then burn the disc image using the Image File setting in the Copy window.
