I have seen the answer/solution to this in this forum but cannot find it......might have been in two posts vs. one. Anyway.......
In MyDVD and selecting "burn" the drive options only show internal drives, not external. When inserting a blank DVD in the internal drive the 'burn project' window indicates drive is empty. The 'properties' screen indicate it is a CD Drive. Closing MyDVD, ejecting/reinstalling the blank DVD results in the properties indicating a DVD drive with blank media.
Now, the fun part. With no Roxio programs running, selecting 'start-programs-Roxio Studio 9 premier-tools-DVDinfoPro', both the internal and external drive is readable and indicate that they can write most formats, read most formats, and play most anything. After starting MyDVD, or VideoWave, running DVDInfoPro indicates the internal drive is 'write-impared' and the external drive can do anything, but the external drive won't show up on the 'drive list'. At this time the desktop drive icons indicate both drives are CD drives. Removing the media changes the icon to DVD drives. Rebooting solves nothing.
External drive is Iomega 'Super DVD', LiteOn device, internal is generic ASUS clunker. Both drives read/write DVDs in various other programs presently. MyDVD has written to both drives previsouly.
