Has anyone succeded in converting VHS tapes to digital files by direct connection of the tape player to the PC?

Thanks.

I don't understand what you mean by "direct connection"? Obviously you need some sort of capture device between the tape player and your PC. I have used my DV camcorder as the between device and have had no problems capturing. There are numerous devices on the market that can be used to do the capturing.

I forgot to add "using Creator 10"

Thnak for the quick reply... What I mean is hooking the tape directly to the PC (e.g. S video cable or USB) instead of using a digital camcorder as a go-between.

Read the information provided. :)

Your VHS puts out an analog signal and you computer takes only a digital signal. There are a lot of devices that will do the conversion for you. Some video capture cards from about $50 will do capture; there are some A/D converters that use a USB interface with your computer. Pinnacle makes a series of these from DVC 90 and higher. These will work in V9 so they should work in V10.

Hi,

I hooked up my VCR to my computer and use Roxio EMC 9 Deluxe to capture with no intermediary device. It's not V.10 but thought I would let you know anyway. I think maybe the programmers would not remove such convenient functionality when writing the next version up? Also, before I purchased Roxio EMC, I played with the trial versions of a bunch of other consumer-level video editing programs and I was able to capture my old VHS tapes this same way with all of them except Adobe. So, it may be do-able for you, too.

I hope this helps,

karri, I think that you have a video card or A/D converter that does the A/D conversion without you realizing it. No way a computer without one will do the conversion. I believe that goes along with the MCE. According to the literature you have a Hauppauge video card; several of them are capable of video capture.

If the OP has a card that does work, then that person won't need another A/D converter. Without the OP giving us more information, the replies stand. See the link to supported capture devices.

Hi sknis,

I am not technically savvy, so bear with me. Yes it is a Hauppauge. The cable I used is the one with the red, yellow, and white connectors on each end.

I plug the VCR into the back of the computer, but from the way the computer is laid out, it seems I could plug it into the front as well.

Thanks :)

ETA: If anyone is interested, the precise card is Hauppauge WinTV PVR (Personal Video Recorder) PCI II.

Did you purchase EMC 10 and get the version that comes with a Dazzle 100 unit ? If so, you can use that as the device to capture your VHS tapes from you VCR. That's assuming of course that you have a dedicated Video card and the cables that have the three (red, white (audio) and yellow (video)) on one end and a mini- plug on the other end to insert into your "Line-In" port on the video card.

Your Hauppage is the intermediary device :)
