Question

When I tried to check for updates or tried to register Online, a window comes up to tell me that I need to connect to the Internet. Well, I am using DSL which is always ON, but Roxio program doesn't seem to detect it. Is there a preference, options or settings I need to configure so it will recognize my DSL connection? Thanks.

Which browser are you using? It might be blocking a connection as protection. Programs like Norton Security can also do this.

That's not entirely true Paul. I have been using Norton Internet Security and other Symantec security programs for a long time now and have never had problems with it blocking anything I do on Roxio's website. I think the OP my have other problems that is causing not being able to get on line to Roxio.(pop ups, virus or ?) The OP should just be able to enter Roxio's web site in the address bar (at least with Internet Explorer 5.5 or above) http://www.roxio.com/support and should have no problems. If that doesn't get him to it then he does have othet problems.

Don't use it myself Frank but I have heard others mention how it will block certain sites at it's leisure. My guess is a pop up blocker too.

I suggest trying Internet Explorer to see if that works. If not, we can rule it out and look somewhere else.

OK here is an update. I got a reply from Roxio and they sent me to a website to download the file that would upgrade me to version 7.5 to see if it would cure my problem. Well I downloaded the file and tried to install it and I got this error message:

The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer Service because the program to be upgraded may be missing or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch.

When I go to Support/Updates for my origianl version 7, they only show version 7.1.1.189 which is what I have now. What is missing in between, that will not allow me to upgrade to version 7.5 per the Error message above?

This usually means it's the wrong version. There is no patch to update you to 7.5, there is only an upgrade which is not free.

Was your original version the downloaded version or retail? The updates are not the same for each...your retail version cannot be updated with a patch for the ESD version and vice versa.

Thanks Paul. I think you are correct. I bought a retail full version Online. Version 7 (CD disc) I was only able to update from what the Support/Update website shows. Why Roxio sent me the other website to download version 7.5 I guess I'll never know. In any case, thanks again Paul. The only thing is, I still don't know why I can't go to Updates directly from the program. It still wants me to connect to the Internet. ????

You might be right Paul that running Mozilla Firefox (Which I am not familiar with at all) might have something to do with it and trying the update using Internet Explorer is worth trying. By the way, I have read other posts where there is confusion knowing the difference between "UPDATE" and "UPGRADE". If you go from EMC 7.1.1.189 to EMC 7.5, that is an "UPGRADE", not an UPDATE.

Also, there have been many others that have tried going to an UPDATE directly from their program and always seem to get the same answer "There are no updates available at this time". I had the same experience a long time ago. Why you can't update directly from the program is a good question that as far as I know hasn't been answered.

By the way Paul, you might be correct in saying that others have found Norton to stop their connection and update. That could very well be, as there are settings in the options for the program that will stop "Pop Ups" and other items. So if one hasn't changed some of their options, you might be right. I have always edited my options so it doesn't interfere with what I am trying to do.

Frank, I'm so seldom right that it looks rather funny when the words, 'you might be right' are next to my name :)

My wife's laptop has NIS installed. It's an aggravation to her so I did have to tweak it a bit to leave her alone. If you don't know what you're doing with computers, leave it alone to be safe. However, it can aggravate you like a mosquito you just can't get rid of.

Well, YOU ARE RIGHT Paul when it comes to "Tweaking" NIS. There are so many options you can choose from that it makes it quite difficult for a lot of users to set it the way they want it. I was just trying to agree with you about what might cause Norton to interfere with what an OP might be trying to do. So let me refrase my statement---

"You are right Paul that NIS can cause problems, sometimes" LOL :) And I rarely find your replies to be wrong, so that "Seldom Right" statement you made will not be agreed to by many of the posters that you have helped.

Frank..........(Just another user trying to be of some help)
