EMC10 Slow Install

Steve76063

Question

Just how long should an install of EMC10 take? After inserting the DVD, it took about 5 minutes for the Welome screen to come up. Then, when I pressed the 'Click here to istall now' button, it took at least another 10 minutes before I saw any installer screen! And then, to make matterw worse, it takes 2 1/2 hours to do the install!!!!!

I made sure to not be running other apps while installing, and even killed some of the System Tray programs that I wasn't going to be using and still it took 2 1/2 hours!!!!!

Is 2 1/2 hours normal for an EMC10 installation??

It's possible that the 1.4GB file had to unzip (uncompress) before the install started and that can take some time even on a fast system. However, everything does seem to be much slower for you and I don't know why.

At least you got it installed. Does it all seem to be working ok?

Yes it did have to un-zip itself first, and that took 10 minutes (on a dual-core 2.6 GHz AMD!). After that point it took:

8 more minutes to come up with the 'language' option;

31 more minutes to install using the 'Typical' settings!

Sure wish I know what it was doing all that time! I checked using Process Explorer, and most of the time the System Idle Process was taking 80-95% of the time so it doesn't look like the machine was really under a load--the install was just slow?

At that time, no it wasn't working OK...I had an 'activation' issue with the MPEG-2 encoder that wouldn't let MyDVD run (my main reason or getting EMC10).

But, I finally got my EMC10 to install correctly!

In the end, I un-installed all Roxio and Sonic applications.

Searched the Registry for any Roxio or Sonic entries and eliminated them.

Ran the Install Cleanup to remove Roxio and Sonic entries.

Un-installed my ZoneAlarm firewall.

Turned off Windows Defender.

Stayed connected to the internet so that I could 'register' the first time it came up (which made me nervous as I'd turned off both my firewall and Defender!).

Installed the program (which still took 50 minutes!) using the Typical settings, but at least now my MyDVD works!

I have to admit, this is the most work I've ever had to do to install a piece of software!

Sounds like you optical drive is having a bit of trouble reading the disk. Is it clicking? (pickup seeking).

Beerman gave good advice. Copy the files from the DVD to your H/D and install from there.

Well, I took your advice during one of my many un-installs (I still don't have MyDVD working yet, but that's in other threads).

I copied the 1.4Gig file from the DVD I got from Roxio onto my desktop. After double-clicking it, it took 15 minutes for the first screen to show up! Another 5 minutes to get through the install prompts, and then after the install actually started, I left and went to lunch! If/When I do another re-install, I'll stick around and time ALL the steps!

BTW, I'm running on an Hp 7750N desktop (Dual Core AMD 5000+ with 2Gig ram and 500Gig disk).
