EMC 10 does NOT start up on Vista

Wizbang

Question

I have a Dell M1330 with 4 gig of memory. I installed EMC 10 following all the directions for a clean install such as shutting down all McAfee services etc.The install went fine and everything seemed to work. After a few weeks (today) I tried to run EMC 10 and all I get is a few seconds of CPU cycles and then NOTHING. I've tried to run as administrator and also tried to start individual programs but NOTHING runs. No error messages. I've rebooted and the same problem - NOTHING happens. All other aspects of my Vista 32 bit system seem to work just fine.

What is going on with Vista and EMC 10?????

I use a program called "Startup Organizer" to turn off the cute little services that "periodically check for updates" (and most likely send my bank account logins out to who knows where). I turned off all the Roxio startup services. It runs - more or less; it hangs up a lot. As far as I can determine it's doing as the previous poster speculated - generates an untrapped error. Task Manager says Roxio's "waiting for a response" from me.

Be nice if they'd fix it, but judging by the sloppiness of the rest of EMC 10 I have my doubts. Any chance of a 10.1 release? Maybe even upgrade or patch all us guys who shelled out bucks for 10?

Done any computer maintenance lately? Do you have many programs running in the background? Have you tried a bootup without the Startup Organizer running. Not really a needed program. It sounds like a problem to me.

OK

I did the 'full monty' deletion:

-Used msconfig to stop all startup and Roxio Services

-Used Windows Install Cleanup

-Deleted all the various Roxio and Sonic Folders (a real PITA in Vista)

-Removed all the various Roxio and Sonic registry entries with regedit

-rebooted

-created restore checkpoint

-turned off McAfee virus checking

-installed Roxio 10

-rebooted

-IT NOW WORKS

-installed Roxio 10 content

-IT STILL WORKS

-use msconfig to enable all startup services

-reboot

-AND IT STILL WORKS OK

So in summary - I now have everything on my system as before and EMC 10 seems to work OK for now.

One interesting observation - I did NOT restart the following Roxio services under the msconfig services tab and they are still listed as disabled:

-RoxMediaDB 10

-Roxio Hard Drive Watcher 10

-Roxio UPnp Server 10

-Roxio UNuP Renderer 10

I originally disabled them in the first step at the top of this note - I am afraid to play around with them for now.

Me too. EMC10 on XP Pro. I paid and downloaded only this last week. I get the splash screen, and after many seconds, the second screen. But if I click on anything on the second screen, EMC 10 hangs.

I have not been able to get EMC10 to work at all.

If I have to download microsoft utilities as suggested earlier and go through manual uninstalls and reinstalls and registry repairs, I'd prefer to simply get my money back.

I had a look at Nero and dismissed it as an option because it was an ''all things to all people" application -- bloatware. I had hoped EMC10 would be a professionally created application that did what I wanted -- and would run efficiently. But I'm seriously disappointed.

What's the chance of getting my money back, I wonder? I'm sure Roxio makes that process virtually impossible...

Hi Thelonius,

This sounds like a corrupted download. I would re-download the application. If that doesn't work, contact support through selfserve.roxio.com, which will create a support ticket for your issue. They will help you get EMC 10 going.

You may want to set the RoxMediaDB 10 to Manual, or you may have problems. See Post #12 in the following thread:

Hey, I am late to the game, but I am having the same problem. I installed 10, on an XP system with 2 megs. It worked fine the first couple days, now, I click the icons, get the hour glass a few seconds, then nothing happens. And I did not do anything to my system to change it.

I did a complete uninstall and reinstall, and still nothing happens. I am down and out now, not being able to make CDs, and it is killing me. I need some kind of solution to this FAST?!?

I feel your pain - Oh John at Roxio - where are you now???? :glare:

My EMC 9.0 seems to run fine on my other XP system and I am NOT upgrading.

Good point - I will try that. I opened a ticket with Roxio and the end result is I need to uninstall and then re-install. This is not the way to handle errors. As a systems manage for 26+ years I've seen this behavior before. There is an environmental problem that is causing the Roxio programs to end abnormally BUT Roxio did not do a good job in capturing the error code. So the Roxio program abends and throws an error but it is not caught and thus not reported. So because of the poor coding effort on Roxio's part the customer, who paid good maoney for the program had to spend 1-2 hours going through the tedious uninstall and reinstall process and then hope it works. Reinstallation is unacceptable since, even if successful, I know, in my gut, that the unknown environmental problem is still out there waiting to come into play again. Roxio MUST build in better error eporting so that we have a chance to understand WHY the program is aborting and can do something about the problem. :angry2:

As a former employee of a software provider, I can say a big AMEN to that!

If you uninstall Paragon Drive Backup 8.51, are you able to launch EMC10 successfully?

I think the original poster may have a different issue then the rest of you. If a program is running fine and then one day it stops, something changed. If it wasn't directly related to the program (a clean install would fix this) then something else on the system changed.

For the other folks (not the original poster) that are having this symptom, how long did the install take? It sounds like it simply may not have installed properly. If it installed really quickly, try this:

Download Windows Installer Cleanup utility from here...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Install it, run it, and remove DirectXInstallService. You should be able to reinstall EMC 10 now and it should take longer then several minutes.

I am the original poster and I would like to understand what I coul dhave done to have these symptoms. The only thing installed after Roxio is Paragon Drive Backup 8.51. What could cause the Roxio .exe file to not run and not generate any error messages?

I also had this issue with 9.1 and hoped that this would be fixed in 10! I guess there really is not much difference between 9 & 10. So any suggestions out there. No error messages nothing!! Just a few seconds of CPU cycles and then NOTHING!!!!!!

Also if someone knows how to trap the command response I would like to know what is happenning.

Something may have been introduced to your system since EMC 10 last worked. Maybe a Vista update. Check it out.
