Choosing Media

Dallas Cole

Question

I was wondering if someone can help me in deciding what type of media to use for DVD projects. Like what is the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R? My burner is only rated at 4X, should i get 4X and slower rated discs or are the higher speed ok to work with?

I usually just buy the cheapest sleeves of about 50 or so. I am looking at trying to backup/convert my VHS to DVDs. I already have the hardware to do all that but just wondering about media choice.

Thanks

Dallas

For the Sony 540A burner in your signature, look at this Sony support site for that drive. It lists ones they recommend, which include Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden, which you find oftern recommended here by other users. Wouldn't hurt to check into a formware upgrade while you are there (if you haven't already updated it to the latest).

In adddition to what Larry said, you should update that burner to the latests firmware, because you may have problems finding 4X media, now.

An updated firmware should allow you to burn to media that is faster than 4X, although the burner won't burn any faster than 4X.

Bruce, Dallas has answered all that in his 'Choppy Video' in V 9 Burning Issues post. I asked him to use the

Sony Drive Check Utility to test his aging Sony Drive. Don't know if he did but he then starts this thread.

Dallas you need to stick with a thread for help if that is what you want.

Mr Hardin and I both questioned his media in that post. When DVDInfo Pro didn't return a MID for his media

I asked him to do the drive test.

I doubt you will find any 4X media unless you can travel into the past, or have access to my closet.

cd ;)

Thanks, CD. I did not go back to check his other threads. :( My advice then, would be to get a new drive, if different media doesn't work any better. I'll bow out now.

Ok sorry about adding the portion about brand. I was mostly wondering about the difference between -R and +R. As for the new drive, I have been thinking about a BluRay burner but don't have the money for it yet.

Thanks

Chances are that most of the Recorded DVDs that you have already done on the Cheapest media you could find, has already started to rot and lost any quality it had. You need to educate yourself by doing some googling on Disc Rot and then invest in better quality media so you won't end up wasting tons of man hours and throwing your DVDs away because you tried to save a few pennies. I get Sonys on sale for 50 for $13 and they are good quality and I very seldom have a coaster, I can't remember my last one. I have DVDs from two years or so back when Sony was T.Y. and MIJ and now they are MIT and still show the same quality as before. Find a brand out of the top three and stick with it. BluRay is a waste of money if you are taking short cuts on everything else.
