Missing file on install from CDs

Doris H.

Question

When I try to install EMC10, I get a message that the file DotNetFX.exe is missing.

I will admit that when I loaded the software (from CD) that I ran into a few weird problems, but it eventually seemed to complete OK. The problems were that it couldn't seem to find the right disc, and I tried all of them; finally it got a message that the software (why didn't I copy that name down?) had encountered an error and needed to close. However, when I closed the instruction window and the install window, the command line window was asking me to load Disc 3 - the last disc supposed to have been loaded was Disc 2 - it seemed to be loading for some time, then I got a message saying I had the wrong disc in - gave me a serial # for a disc followed by a -1. None of the discs had serial numbers on them.

Now, once I find out how to deal with the problem, do I need to delete the install directory? Also, do I have to uninstall my previous version (which is version 5, and an incomplete version). This has been a lot of money spent on software that I can't install.

Hi Doris,

You ordered the right thing. A second hard drive might be a good option for you, but you can definitely back up your first hard drive to CD-R discs. The "File Backup" feature in the Backup section of Creator will do the job for you, automatically spanning your backup across as many discs as you will need. To install Creator 10 "bare bones", you can choose "Custom" install, then remove Update Manager, MediaShare, Disc Gallery, CinePlayer, and SmartSound. You'll want to keep the rest of the components.

The File Backup feature can back up your files regularly to a second hard drive (in case you choose this option).

Good luck with your install and backup!

Tom

What about the issue of the Pentium III not having enough power to run the software? And do I have to uninstall Easy CD 5 before I install it? It came loaded on my PC (with some features disabled), and I'd hate to lose it, if I find I can't use EMC10. All I get from the help desk seem to be canned replies. They said, yes, you must uninstall older versions, and proceeded to tell me how to uninstall & reinstall EMC 9.

Well, it's all over now. Roxio is giving me a refund, and I will be reloading 5.1 and looking for different CD burning software. Actually, I think I'll be looking for another computer, as this one is getting rather old, as well as having inadequate hard disc space. It's been nice knowing you all.

Is there a way to find out exactly when the last defrag was done? I did it just after finding enough space to load the software. I have been told that defragging an older disc is risky, and when I get the replacement disc, I want to do a system restore back to asap after running the defrag. It seems that every time I try to do an install, I lose disk space. I'm down to 2.8 gig now.

Hi Doris,

If you think your hard drive is getting flaky I would not defragment it. But you should run a scan. Open "My Computer", right click on your hard drive, and choose "properties". From the "Tools" tab, choose "Check Now" (under "Error Checking"). Scan your HD with both options selected. This will identify any bad sectors, and mark them as bad.

OK - the downladed files are as you suspected compressed archives. If you can find out where they went, then by all means delete the temps (clear your c:\windows\temp folder first - usually a good place to start)

Try running one for a short while (force it to stop once you see where it's extracting to as sometimes it does say) and then go there and delete everything in it. If you can't find out where, search for 'EMCGadgets64' and see if that is with the rest of the files (it's a set of files that is part of the installer package - get that and you're on the right track for removing them)

Once that's done, do the clean install routine. This time, right click on the .exe files (as I said, they're self-extracting archives) and open with winzip or winrar to a temp folder and in that run setup.exe

Couldn't find that; should it have been on disk 2? That was the only one I extracted. I did notice one file name, but it was a commonly used file name (data1.cab), and I found several occurrences of it, but none of the directories had anything in them (or names) that looked like EMC files.

What a nightmare! I tried extracting the files (ran disk2.exe) seemed to go smoothly enough, it actually told me that emc10 was installed (which of course, it couldn't possibly be) and now I can't find where it extracted the files to, and I'm back down to 2.8 gig of free space. Thud-1.gif

A quick way to check Doris

Make a temp folder on the hard drive and copy the contents of the CD into it - then run setup.exe from there

If it fails to copy, then the CD is indeed faulty

I already have contacted them for a replacement to disc 2; don't know why I didn't think of that, but since it failed twice with disc 2 in the drive, I think that's a pretty good bet. The instructions I got to reorder the replacement on line weren't accurate, or else the options weren't working, so I had to call via landline, and wait for about half an hour for a live body.

On Edit: I did as you suggested, and it copied OK. Hum.gif I did see a slight scratch near the outer edge of the written portion of the CD, but it didn't look bad enough to cause a problem. I know about that kind of stuff, because I had to work at causing a disk to fail to test a loading script, and I scratched the daylights out of it, and it still wouldn't fail. I finally scribbled heavily on it with a ball point pen, and that did the job.

I found enough space, but it failed again. This time I got a message "the install failed"; it closed the command line window, and didn't even ask for disc 3. I suspect disc 2 is bad, because the error seems to come part way through, or near the end of disc 2. I've updated my ticket on the support site.

Hi Doris,

I found an article on the Internet which describes your PC...

http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial/ar...h0404/11h04.asp

A 1 GHz Pentium III processor will be fine for the basic CD-ROM burning that you plan to do.

We didn't specifically test EMC 10 on top of EMC 5 (we tested it with EMC 6, 7, 8, and 9). While I don't expect that this would be a problem, you are probably better safe than sorry... I would uninstall EMC 5. You should have a CD that came with your PC that would allow you to reinstall EMC 5, should you want to do this later. But EMC 10 will give you everything that EMC 5 provided, and much more.

All the best,

Tom

Thank you very much! I think all my questions have been answered - unless I have a problem with the uninstall.

Ouch! I guess it will be a while! I just discovered I'm short on disc space, so I'll have to do some clean-up.

Jess, Doris H already has the CD. She is trying to install it on a PentiumIII system.

Basically, I was telling the poster to ignore the DVD-ROM requirement as indicated in the System Requirement as the CD version (which you pointed out) is one of the purchase options (short of saying that the DVD-ROM requirement is not necessarily a must). :)

Thanks! When I ordered it, I just clicked on the "upgrade" on my version 5. I just wanted to have some software I could back up my entire hard drive with. Also, the version 5 that I have does not have all the features enabled. I have been told that my best bet for a backup would be to install a second hard drive. I will probably do this as well, because my hard drive seems to be getting a bit tired (the reason for the urgency for a backup). Could you give me information to do a custom install that will give me the "bare bones?" I will probably use it most for backing up documents and pictures, and of course, will need the back up hard disc feature. When I tried to install it, and looked at the features on the custom install panel, I couldn't tell much about what it was offering. There were even boxes checked that had no description.

Hi Doris,

We're sorry to hear that you ran into trouble.

We created these CDs as an alternative for customers like you who don't have a DVD drive, but would like to get Easy Media Creator 10. These CDs contain the same installation files (the same product) as the DVD version, but the installation is a little more time-consuming than it is from one DVD.

Please take a look at the instructions for installing from CD, posted in this knowledgebase article...

http://kb.roxio.com/content/kb/Creator/000161CR

If you follow these instructions and you still have problems, please contact us through the "contact support" link on the main support page (click the word "Support" at the upper-right on these forums, then click "Contact Support"... or just go here.. http://selfserve.roxio.com/.

The dotnetfx file is included on the CDs... so the message you are seeing indicates that all of the files did not get copied successfully from all of the CDs.

Basically, the installer program on the CDs will copy all of the files from each CD to a temporary folder on your PC. You'll need at least 3.5 gigabytes of free space on your PC before you start. After you are done with everything you can delete the temporary folder and all the files in this folder.

I hope this helps you. Thanks for choosing Easy Media Creator! We hope you enjoy it.

Oh, great! Now they tell me! A DVD/ROM is required - and I requested the CD version. Why have a CD version if it requires a DVD/ROM? And I was just requesting an update from EMC5.

Based on the website order page, Creator 10 is offered in either DVD or CD format. You should be ok then to install the CD version in your CD drive.

If you really have a P III, even if you get the software to install, you will be lucky if you can open any programs. That computer doesn't have the power to run this software.

The site store doesn't show any hardware requirements - just the operating system. One of them is XP w/SP2 - which I have (home edition).

Is there a quick way to come up with this info? Internally, my computer is exactly what it was when I got it, except that I have increased the memory from 128 to 256. It's a Dell Dimension L1000R, Pentium III, Windows XP Home Edition with SP2. 20 gig hard drive. I can't tell you anything else off hand, except that, as mentioned above, I have a "crippled" version of EMC 5. I don't know anything about the drivers, etc. I have only a CD-RW.

List your system specs, similar to how I have mine listed in my signature.
