Samsung in the Blu-ray era At the moment when HD TV and digital braodcasting services are booming and the demand for HD broadcasts is rising, the advantages of Blu-Ray drives are noticeable for consumers and translate themselves into high storage capacities for high definition videos in an unrivaled quality. Samsung Electronics, leader on the optical drives market, is ready to head the technological evolution with the commercial release of 2 Blu-Ray drives: the internal SH-B022A and the external SE-B026A. Samsung Blu-ray burners SH-B022A / SE-B026A These innovating products offer an unseen storage capacity: 25GB on a single layer disc and 50GB on a dual layer disc. These triple-format drives can read and record on BD, DVD and CD. They offer a 2x speed for BD, 12x for DVD and 40x (for the internal SH-B022A) or 32x (for the external SE-B026A) for CD. The Blu-Ray Technology Superior performace The blue-violet laser technique offers a capacity of 50GB on a BD (Blu-Ray Disc) and it is the successor of the DVD. today's DVD drives use a red laser (650nm) to read and record data, and the BD uses a blue laser with a shorter wavelength (405nm). By using this technique, it is more precise and can read informations in 0.16 micron long entities, twice as small as the ones used on a DVD. By storing the information in such a way, it can store 25Gb on a single layer, almost 5 times the storage capacity of a normal DVD. A solution for High Definition The BD offers and exceptional storage capacity of 50GB on a dual layer disc and 25Gb on a single layer. A single layer disc can contain over 2 hours of high definition TV or more than 13 hours of conventional TV broadcasts. These discs are available in a dual layer and rewriteable format, the BD-RE. You will be able to watch HD BD-ROM's and record digital TV shows. Compatibility The Samsung Blu-Ray drives offer, on top of the HD recording on BD, reading and writing of conventional DVD's and CD's thanks to the two lenses and 3 laser diodes. My clunky old DVD writer already has black, cream, and silver faceplates so THEY're not new, and it also has a firmware upgrade function so I don't know what's new about that. Crafty little sods, though. Talking about BD-ROMS and BD-RE, they're trying to redefine all the terms you've come to know and love, just to prevent the purveyors of HD-DVD from using the same terms. And "HD BD-ROMs", now if that isn't calculated to confuse punters then I'll eat a CD label! Boxers to your corners, and let the fight begin. Heh heh.... for some folks, that is the thing that counts. If it works is secondary. I take the reverse approach. If it works, I could care less what it looks like (as proven by the truck I drive). You're displaying a lack of clues if you part-read something and then ask questions which show you didn't read it properly if at all. I'm sure you don't want to seem clueless. 50 GB is the standard capacity of a DL Blu-Ray disk, which is what the article's about.
