I can't see my Discs, I can't burn DVDs... I'm useless T_T

Well, I'll start off by telling everybody the required things that the FAQ told me to:

I'm running Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6, on Windows XP, on a Dell. I just got the Dell (used) and I'm not really sure about all the bits and specifics, but I hope that's fine.

For the "drive identifyer" thing I have "HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4480B"... not sure what any of that stuff means.

I just installed Roxio, and even though I've had the disc for a while, I've never really burned a DVD with it (just CDs, and that was on my old computer).

So before I installed it, the CD/DVD drive thing could recognize store-bought DVDs, burned CDs, music CDs, game CDs, and so on, but now when I put in a blank DVD to dry and burn one (I've tried three different Brands, all 4.7GB), it always says that I don't have a burner, or that I don't have a disc. It's really confusing. T_T

Screenshot of it:

(Oh! Also, just in case it's important at all, I'm trying to burn .avi files onto a DVD...)

So then in one of the other threads about this sort of problem, it said to try a different program for the actual burning, and I downloaded "Sothink Movie DVD Maker". Same thing - it didn't recognize my DVD burner thing, and when I checked the "show all drivers" box, it said to insert a disc, but there WAS a disc!

I looked into "my computer" and looked at the D drive (the DVD/CD thing) and it said there wasn't anything in it, but physically there WAS. Weird, right? O_O

So I'm assuming it was a problem with the Dell-Microsoft-BurningDVDs compatibility thing somebody mentioned in another thread, but I need it spelled out really simple for me. I only noticed the problem was there after I installed Roxio, so It ought to have something to do with it.

(and on another note, the drag-to-disc program thing is REALLY annoying)

If anybody knows exactly what's wrong, or why this is happening, I'd appreciate it if you could help me. I really need to make this DVD. :(

That unit will only play DVD's, it is not a burner.

According to this site: http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?r...p;page=Features which I foiund by using Google to search your drive, you have a "combo" drive that is capable of reading and burning CD's, and is capable of reading DVD's, but is NOT capable of burning DVD's. You'll need to get another drive if you want to burn DVD discs also.

Well thanks -so- much for the totally quick replies you guys. This is honestly the fastest help forum I've ever seen. ^_^~<3

As long as I'm here, do you have any models you might suggest? Like, what kinda hardwarestuff should I look for?

Well...... you have a OLD computer, OLD Roxio software (their at Version 10 now) so you might have problems if you bought a new DVD burner. Xmas is coming soon ,why dont you write Santa, maybe he will come up with a new system (there are some real good buys out there).....depending on what part of the world you live in.
