Some DVD files not recognized

Bajista

Question

I'm having a quirky little problem. I'd like to dump video from mini-dvds onto my hard drive, and then convert to .avi format for editting using a different software package. This is working fine using Copy and Convert for some files, but for some reason the software doesn't recognize 2 of my video sessions as being in valid DVD format. I'm perplexed, since the DVD files came from the same source, and I can't see any differences in the file structures. I can't see why the software would recognize some files and not the others.

Any ideas for what may be causing this?

I've never had to finalize any of the video from this camera; in fact, the "finalize" function is not available on the camera, I think because I'm using rewritables.

From the PDF File for your Camera...

DVD Camcorder

SC-DC171/DC173(U)/DC175/DC575

Which discs recorded on the DVD

Camcorder can be played in DVD

players/recorders/drives?

Discs must be finalized before they can be played

on common DVD player/recorders.

Finalizing is a process required to make the DVD discs

you recorded playable on common DVD players.

DVD+ReWritable DVD+R DL DVD-R

DVD+ReWritable DVD+R DL DVD+R DL

 DVD player

 DVD recorder

 DVD driveequipped

PC

DVD+ReWritable DVD+R DL DVD-RW

In case of Video mode

 DVD player

 DVD recorder

 DVD drive-equipped

PC

In case of VR mode

 DVD recorder that

supports DVD-RW

VR mode.

DVD+ReWritable DVD+R DL DVD+RW

 DVD player

 DVD recorder

 DVD drive-equipped

PC

 You can play back

DVD+RW discs on

other DVD players

or DVD recorders

without finalizing

them.

Did you finalize the discs in the camera first?

No, the files came from rewritable mini-DVD disks. I've never had to finalize any of the video from this camera; in fact, the "finalize" function is not available on the camera, I think because I'm using rewritables.

Strange thing is, I can actually play the individual .VOB files on my computer, by just double-clicking on the file in Explorer. However, with some video sessions I can do the same thing with the .IFO files, but not with other video sessions. But I can play the .VOB files in every case... hope that makes sense; I'm not too knowledgeable about video file structures. Thanks!!

The .IFO files are the DVD information or control files, while the .VOBs have the actual data streams.

If the sessions which are giving you problems with C&C are also the ones where you can't play through the .IFO, then your camera may have made errors in some of the IFO files. These could be mechanical - an error in the write - or logical - wrong information written.

The DVD standard says that there should be a backup copy of each IFO on your disc, and that's the .BUP file. If it is a mechanical error in the IFO, copying the .BUP file over the IFO on your HD might correct that.

If it's a logic error you might have to rewrite the IFO with something like IFOEdit, but that's a specialist task and is way beyond me.

Brendon

Bajista,

could you list the make and model of your camera? Your rewritable mini-DVD disc is that + or - RW?

The 2 video sessions the software doesn't recognize are they on different disc's or the same RW Disc?

The camera is a Samsung SC-DC173U. I'm using DVD+RW disks, and the unrecognized video files came from 2 different disks.

I tried the procedure Brendon suggested, to no avail. Seems like there's a logic error in the .ifo files. Is there software available that will convert .VOB files to other formats for editting? It seems like that's what I'm up against.

thanks,

Brad
