Poor video play back quality on the PC

Keith Parker

Question

I have captured video from my Sony DVHandyCam but the playback quality on the PC is very poor when the screen is enlarged but the taped version is ok when used on the TV. The main reason for transfering from tape is to make copies on a DVD but the quality is poor on the PC? Has anybody encountered similar problems.

I'am using a standard USB cable from the Handycam to the pc, tried different USB cables but playback quality on the PC is still poor. Would the firewire cable improve the quality of data being transefered from the Handycam to the PC. I'am not sure what format is being used for the capture as this all seems to be automatic, the software only enables you to select HQ, LP, SP & VCD from the capture settings, tried HQ & SP but the quality is same.

Many Thanks

EMC only works properly using a Firewire connection when capturing from a DV camcorder(tape).

Since you have not given any information on how you captured your video its impossible to offer any suggestions. How is you camera connected to the PC? EMC requires a firewire connection? To what format are you capturing? Avi gives the best quality and I get excellent quality after capturing.

Which Handycam? MiniDVD camcorders usually don't have firewire and some of the newer non-tape models, too.

The tape camcorders normally use USB to transfer still images or use the camcorder as a webcam so it would be less quality.

Just guessing on the model number.. That camcorder captures as mpg2 to a mini tape. It comes with a bundled Firewire cable. It also comes with capture software. You can always use that and then do the editing in Video Wave.

Many thanks, I have installed a 3 port PCMI card and firecable. The quallity has improved using the AVI capture and the playback through windows media player is quite good. The next thing to do was to burn a DVD but when playing this through MDVD software the quality was extremly poor which does not make any sense?

Have you any advice as I would like to burn DVD's using the tapes without having to use the handycam as a video device.

The capture device is a Sony Handycam DCR-HC18E DIGITAL VIDEO CAMERA RECORDER

Did you actually burn it to a DVD, or are you only previewing it in MyDVD? What you see on the screen is not necessarily what the quality will be on the final DVD.
