My DVD - sees the .avi file but won't let me select it

karnor1

Question

I have some files saved as .avi files that I want to burn to DVD. When I click on "add new movie," all of the .avi files show up, but the icon on part of them is different. When I click on the .avi icons that aren't 'thumbnails,' nothing happens. It won't let me add them to the project. Any suggestions?

running EMC 9 on

Gateway GT5432 desktop

Windows Vista 32 bit

AMD Athlon 64X2 processor

NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE

You most likely don't have the correct codecs installed. Download Gspot and load your file into it and see what it tells you is needed to work with that file.

Ignacio, it seems that all you need to do is to install the xvid codec. Please go here for the lastest codec from xvid. Install and reboot and you should be good to go.

Thank you Paul. I think we are on the right track. I installed the codec from xvid and subsequently uninstalled the divx bundle. Lo and behold, my .avi files ran ok on windows media player, which they did not do before when I uninstalled divx (remember I would only get sound).

However, when I run RoxioSuite9/My DVD I keep getting the "forbidden" circles with the line through it for the .avi files. It seems to me the problem seems to reside in the Roxio Suite itself, not recognizing some of the codecs that run the .avi files (I don't know if this makes sense..... forgive the neophite here).

Though I thought DivX was the disturbing factor, Xvid codecs now runs all the .avi files that divX ran before, but Roxio still does not read them. I'm in a blind alley. What do you suggest?

Thanks,

Ignacio :(

You need the divx codec to play divx avi files and the xvid codec to play xvid avi files. If you uninstalled Dvix, you uninstalled the divx codec. If divx is installed you likely ran into a problem many have had. Read this post for info on how to fix the problem in EMC9.

I have had the same problem as all of the above with .avi files. Peculiarly, at one time I could use them with MyDVD (MediaCreator suite9). One day, seemgly out of the blue, when I went to use them with MyDVD the icons show up with the red circle with the line across it, i.e., they cannot be accessed. I am at my wits end. It is despicable how little support Roxio gives in addressing this. Roxanne is useless.

Hi, I have the same problem like karnor1 and have tried both solutions without success. I tried to upgrade the sofware but I got an error message "Cannot find the valid version of software" or something like that (the message is in german, it's a rough translation). I have tried both upgrades (Easy Media Creator 9 Suite and the deluxe version, since I don't know which version is installed in my laptop).

And I also have tried to use GSpot and installed the codecs required for my .avi files (XviD --> XviD MPEG-4 Codec and MPEG-1 Layer 3 --> Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 codec). I don't know what's wrong with my MyDVD. I'm new in this, so please help me. :( Thanks

The update requires a Retail version of the software to be installed. If your version, came with your laptop, the updates won't install. That is no doubt the reason you are getting the message about a valid version.

Thank you Paul, I have learned much in this process. This is what I have done, and it has restored the status quo ante.... all seems to be working well:

1/ I had uninstalled DivX and installed Xvid.

2/ I ran "repair" on the Roxio program.

3/ MyDVD is recognizing all previously unrecognized .avi files.

4/ All this is prompted because MyDVD's functionality to establish video chapters can be burned to DVD's which are read by all standard commercial DVD players. On the other hand, DivX's chapter functionality can only be read on DVD players which not only read DivX, but what they call Divx Ultra........ hardly any brands do. Of course, the DivX compression is awesome, but for now, I'm happy with what I have.

Thank you for all your help. :-)

Exactly what type of avi file do you have? If you were able to use these same files previously but no longer can, it's likely some other program took control. There's a little patch that worked in version 8 that you can try. Go here for the patch and after it's executed, reboot and see if that fixes it. Let us know.

Thanks. After I posted, I found that there was an update to 9.1 here on the Roxio website. It wasn't showing up that there was anything available when I clicked on the option to search for updates from the program itself. That fixed most of the problems. I'll try gspot to see if it will fix some of the others.

Thanks Paul, unfortunately the patch didn't work.

1/All the files that do not open are .avi, but a handful of .avi do open. I have no problem with .wmv or mpg types.

2/Using GSpot, I identified the codecs/filters of the .avi files which DO open: they all seem to be divx.

Also using GSpot, I identified the codecs/filters of the .avi which DO NOT open: they all seem to be xvid or some variant thereof, but not "divx"

3/ I uninstalled all my "divx" programs assuming that opening the files with windows media player would fetch the right codec. Unfortunately, it didn't. Using WMP or other video programs, I would only get the audio from the file, not the video. I do not understand why somehow all .avi files have to be filtered through divx and not the wmv's. I suspect divx has corrupted the whole process but I don't know how to extricate it. Also, I do not understand why MyDVD reads divx but not the variant for example xvid codec which seems to be attached to these .avi files. It's all quite weird to me.

4/ I thought about uninstalling and reinstalling Roxio Suite 9, but I went through so much with that program when I first got it, including having to install patches etc., that I am apprehensive about starting from scratch with it.

I would appreciate any help or suggestions you can give me. :(

Thank you,

Ignacio
