Blue Screen of Death with NO Roxio

Piell72

Question

Hi everyone, I am hopping someone can help. I recently installed EMC 9 and my system has been buggy ever since. It started with the dreaded Blue Screen of Death that would happen about 50% of the time I tried to start my computer. I tried everything I could to fix it, including running scandisk and defrag, going to a previous good configuration and following the procedures in the Clean Install thread (but I did NOT Reinstall EMC 9) but nothing helped. I have searched my Hard Drive for any remnants of Roxio or Sonic files and I have removed them all. But I STILL recieve the BSOD about 75% of the time I try to boot my system. And when I get my system to start, I get a "system recovered from a serious error" message from Microsoft and asks if I want to send the error report. After I do I, get a screen that say this:

Download updates for Roxio's UDF Reader (udfreadr.sys)

This problem was caused by Roxio's UDF Reader (udfreadr.sys). Roxio's UDF Reader (udfreadr.sys) was created by Roxio, Inc..

A solution is available that will solve this problem.

Solution - Go to the Roxio, Inc. website to learn more about the solution.

But when I looked on Roxio's website, there aren't ANY updates for EMC 9 (except for the Windows Vista update which does not apply to me).

Short of formatting my hard drive (which I am not willing to do right now because I just wiped my dirve about 3 months ago), is there anything I can do to get rid of the BSOD? It is getting to the point where I have to restart my computer 3 or 4 times before I can get past the BSOD and actually get to use my system.

Last, my custom built configuration:

AMD Athlon XP 2600 Chip

Asus A7N8X-X NVidia nForce 2 400 Motherboard

512 MB of RAM

NVidia GeForce FX 5900 Video Card

Windows XP Pro w/Service Pack 2

Roxio Easy Media Creator 9 Suite (retail box) which has been uninstalled and removed from the registry

IMHO Roxio seriously dropped the ball on EMC 9. I hope SOMEONE can help. Thanks in advance.

Take a look at this thread for a few suggestions.

Beerman,

I have looked at the thread you sent and unfortunately, none of them apply to me. I have already uninstalled Drag to Disk so that there is no mention of it in the Add/Remove Programs list. And again, I have searched my Hard Drive (including the Registry) for ANYTHING from Roxio or Sonic and deleted them all.

As for logging off my computer, again I don't think that it applies to me. I only have one log-on screen and I shut the computer down whenever I am not using it. So every time I start my system, it is a clean boot process and not a switch between users.

Another member called Stas did post a thread about a possible update for EMC 9 but the debate seems to indicate that it is solely for a Dell computer, which, again, does not apply to me (I built my computer from different components). I have downloaded the file but because of the previously stated reason, I am reluctant to try it; especially considering I would have to put EMC 9 back onto my system only to apply a patch that may or may not work. I am keeping the file on my Hard Drive as a last ditch effort to fix the problem, but if that doesn't work then the only other thing I can think of is to format the whole drive and hope that the problem doesn't come back.

Two pretty crappy choices if you ask me.

If this doesn't work, I am seriously going to push for my money back. It's been over 4 months and as of right now I don't have the program installed and somehow it is STILL screwing up my system.

Actually it needn't necessarily be Roxio - read this (from here)

"...Important: Some malware camouflage themselves as UDFReadr.sys, particularly if they are located in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folder. Thus check the UDFReadr.sys process on your pc whether it is pest. We recommend Security Task Manager for verifying your computer's security. ..."

If udfreadr.sys is your problem it did not come from EMC9!

I have Drag to Disc installed and running and no such file exists!

I checked a PC with EMC 8, no such file exists.

I checked a PC with EMC 5 and found a udfreadr.vxd file in it…

My guess is you had an old DirectCD disc and loaded the Reader from it. The Reader is incompatible with XP/Vista and must be removed.

I have searched my Hard Drive for many variations of "udfreadr" and nothing comes up, even when I search hidden and system folders.

As for loading the reader from an old DirectCD disc, I don't have that program. I have searched my Drive for any reference to DirectCD on the off chance that it was installed without my knowledge but nothing shows up on my system. Besdies, Microsoft's message was pretty clear, "this problem was caused by Roxio's UDF Reader (udfreadr.sys)". And considering Roxio EMC 9 was the program I installed right before all these problems started happening, I doubt it was anything else.
