Old Backpack CD writer

Jim L.

Question

Years ago I bought an external Micro Solutions Backpack writer that connected via the parallel port (it came bundled with version 3.5c of Easy CD Creator) and the drive has served me well despite issues with the Roxio software itself from time to time!

Will version 9 or 10 support a drive as old as this? I'm thinking of upgrading the software (finally!) but would like to be sure it will work well with the drive.

Thanks!

Wonder if anyone can help with this question? I recently had to get new PC that came with XP. I have for several years had a Backpack CD Writer, Model: 192100, Series 6 Driver with I believe Adaptec 4 Easy CD Writer program. I find that this setup (Adaptec) will not work with XP - guess this is a case of some good reliable product being left behind due to progress.

My Question(s): Is there an outside chance that someone knows how to make the above setup work with XP? If not, is it possible to get upgraded software for the Backpack CD Writer, Model 192100 that is compatible with XP?

I ask this because this is a good item that I am familiar with and would hate to just toss on the junkpile because of "progress".

As before, you need something that can pick up the drive firmware and recognise it in XP

You've found out that ECD4 won't work - hardly surprising given that the program is older than the OS really

ECD5 or 6 (but check on this post for installing 5) should be fine - check on eBay and Amazon for those and you'd probably pick up the CD very cheaply.

There's not much point in going for the newer suites as youer drive would probably be far too slow to be able to handle the transfer rates

If the OS picks it up it should work - from ECD6 onwards, the programs used dynamic drive detection (it checks the drive firmware and works with that) instead of using a database

Don't expect fast burning from it - and certainly not any video work considering the speed of parallel port connections

That's good to hear...Windows 2000 still recognizes it and, no, no major volume work is ever done on this writer! Just the occasional CD copy but mostly just data files that are too big for floppies or other electronic transmission (FTP, email, etc.) ...

Thanks!

You'll probably get 9.1 - some parts may work (and others won't). it's a bit hit and miss really but the basic stuff should be OK.

Why 9.0 would work with 2K and the update (9.1) won't is a mystery to all of us really. It may be something to do with the Vista Certification (9.0 was compatable, but 9.1 was certified)
