Is it dangerous to upgrade Backup My PC?

KingstonB

Question

I've been using Backup My PC v6.0, in Easy Media Creator 7.5 that I got in mid 2005 (ancient, I know) with relatively few problems. To accomodate a newly purchased USB HDD drive, I recently downloaded from the Roxio site the only available upgrade to BUMP, labeled "Back Up My PC 2006" (no version number). When I went to install the upgrade, I got a message that it would uninstall the old BUMP v6.0 it found and install the "upgrade" in its place, which caused me to wonder whether there might be something in the upgrade that would prevent me from then restoring backups made on DVDs with my earlier version of BUMP (if necesary). I'm holding off on the install until I can figure out whether installing the upgrade might render all my prior DVD backups useless. Would appreciate any experience/wisdom on this! Thanks.

P.S. For reasons best left unstated, advice to "ask tech support" will not be considered "wisdom" in this instance. ;)

There should be no problem with doing restores with BUMP 2006 that were created in BUMP 6, as they are basically the same version. BUMP 2006 is still version 6. Just a higher level and with some added features and add-ons. You can even copy the catalog over into the proper directory for the new version and use and update it.

I believe the catalog is stored in .... Backup MyPC 6\catalog directory for the old and ....Backup MyPC 6 Deluxe\catalog for the 2006 version. Can't remember what all of the higher levels are, but will either be under allusers or the admin account.

Thanks Marlin, this gives me some peace of mind.
