EMC 10 Doesn't even Start

johnelle

Question

I have a retail version of EMC 10. Each time I install it the software works for a few days but then when I come back to it a week or so later I click on the icon and get a watch cursor and then nothing. I have reinstalled using the registry cleaning/deinstall tools. After a while it just stops functioning. Also every time it installs it fails on a reboot doing a "content install" step.

I've learned to expect bugs in Roxio software but this is the worst release yet. Has anybody got this turkey to work or should I try to get my money back?

Yes the "solution" is on page 3 of the thread near the bottom for those of you searching. Don't bother to call Symante--they answer the chat (after a long wait) but can't even explain the basics.

To clarify the directions you need to get into "classic" mode and run a manual scan. If you've run in it previously pretty much everthing its going to find wrong is the Roxio entries so you just right click and tell it to ignore every one of them. It does seem to remember this after you tell it to ignore the entries once.

There is only one that you have to ignore, and it is the one in the thread that I pointed to. Norton will ignore that from that point on, so you should have no worries anymore.

I have discovered one thing about this problem that might help, but I am not sure how to use it.

When my cleanup program (Nortons SystemWorks 2008) does its' weekly cleanup, My REG. file looses:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{3E867EE6-00C0-40FA-95C0-C9CCB3BA7692}].

While working with Roxio's tech. support, this key was mentioned in the last E-mail. So I went back iand ran my "regedit", and sure enough it was gone. When I "imported" my backup it was back there and EMC 10 works again. I know that what I did is only a stop gap, but could someone post a fix for this. Either a downloadable fix or a proceedure to aply to SystemWorks or any of the other "cleanup" programs.

Have Norton SystemWorks ignore that registry key. I did, and I have no problems running Norton WinDoctor, now.

Does anyone know anyway to prevent Norton One Button Checkup from destroying the registry entrys in Creator 10 without running one button checkup and then telling it to ignore a whole bunch of entrys? My one button checkup ran automaticly, zapped the entrys and the log expired while waiting for Roxio to respond to the tech support issue so I suppose I will have to do a "clean install". How about a patch Roxio that fixes this problem that appears to be unique to only your products. I would even accept a patch to reinstall the missing registry entrys. That seems simple enough.

I'd have to guess that you have Norton SystemWorks or some other registry cleaner that is causing the problem.
