Easy CD & DVD Burning CD Roms disabling

Jim G.

Question

Hi

I have the red box Easy CD & DVD Burning (compatible with Vista, Windows, XP and Win 2000. I had the program installed on my Win 2000 machine. No problems. I upgraded to XP and tried to install the program. When it was completely installed, I noted that MY COMPUTER did not display my CD reader or my CD writer. I uninstalled the program and the drag to disk program and rebooted a couple of times and my CDs still do not show as being accessable. They do eject and the light comes on, the computer just does not recognize them. I do have Easy Media Creator 9 but I cannot install that either--it locks up my computer. HELP!!!! Thanks Jim

I wonder if I can ungrade to 9.1 or will this cause another round of potential fixes and take a lot of time to get working???

9.1 is ONLY to fix problems that occurred with Vista - it won't make a scrap of difference with XP

But you know? RealPlayer worked with a simple installation...no need for a bunch of patches, etc. I do not like RP either, but it must be a more progressive company since it installed so easily. I wonder how much RP charges you if you have a problem? Roxio's policy is ridiculous.

Any Trojan installs oh-so-easily (doesn't mean they're progressive)

As for warning of problems - as an IT tech, I do warn of potential problems, but, you know, in most cases I've come across in real situations are usually down to a totally messed up OS installation (or total failure of the customer to implement even the most basic of computer maintenance)

Is your Windows a $30 program? You're lucky. M$ usually charges us a lot more than that for Windows.

As for how much to spend? It depends on how much you want your operating system fixed. You can't just go buy different burning software and hope that will fix the Microsoft problem.

You shouldn't have trouble with Ver 9.0 in XP. Problems can always arise if you have too much stuff running when you go to install (and you'll see those on these boards because that's what the forums are for) but a huge number of people have installed and run it without undue problems.

I just did not have the time to mess with this problem for awhile. But my IT guy came back into town and I told him the situation and he said many have just left Roxio and gone to other burning software. He is a hardware guy, but he has had calls when people have tried to install and lost their CD drives. He is not a Microsoft fan, but is Certified. He mentioned that Roxio really had to make their software work with MS, not the other way around. Like it or not, (and I do not) MS rules the world. To have to apply so many fixes and spend so much time was pretty ridiculous. I also got about 3 "fixes" from them, so I had a possible 4 fixes to do..which just is not right. The IT guy says "you have Nero?" I said yes but had not used it for quite a while. He tells me to burn a CD or DVD with Roxio after I download the free REALPLAYER and 9.0 should recognize the drives and forget the fixes. So I do it and you know, Roxio now recognizes the drives. I have no clue why this worked--perhaps you do. But it sure beat applying fixes. Thanks Jim

Our IT people (6) manage to keep 1,500 MS PC's running with a minimum of fuss and bother.

It has been my experience that if all someone can do is badmouth products, their 'value' is far less than they might think…

Glad you got it running.

Hi Jim,

This is a problem that XP has with various CD and DVD burning software sometimes. It happens with the opposition's software as well as Rocio's.

Please go to the Roxio.com support page here, and read one of the Top Support Notes "Drives are missing after install". That should solve your problem.

Brendon

OK--I went thru that proceedure on the Easy CD & DVD and got the drives re-installed. So after all this time I had no program but I do have my drives back. I then decided to install the Creator 9 on my XP. Got it installed and of course after the installation, the drives disappeared again. Went thru the proceedure and got the computer to recognized the drives and they work, but the Creator 9 does not recognize them. I first tried to create a label and it would not recognize the drive(s) and then I thought I would try to copy a disk and of course could not do this because of the failure of the program to see the drives. I even thought I would call support, but to have to pay for the right to install the program rubbed me the wrong way. I would like to think I am a reasonable intelligent person, and certainly a better CPA than I am a computer tech, but this entire proceedure should not be this complicated. The 9.0 says it works on VISTA--I would think that it would then work on XP. Meanwhile, I have wasted a ton of time trying these installs and then ROXIO wants to charge me for help?

Appreciate your help.

PS I closed down all programs that I could before the install.

Lot of whining but a complete lack of information as to what you have done… You went through a "procedure". What "procedure"?

It is an MS problem as was stated.

I have installed V9 more than a dozen times during and after beta testing and have only lost a drive on one occasion in XP. Why you are so 'lucky' only MS would know.

But if you uninstall the program and then reinstall the drives you are defeating the purpose! As soon as you reinstall the program the drives are leaving!

Install the program, reinstall the drives and everything will work.

It was Adaptec and that did little program won't even install on XP! Nor could it burn a DVD, so much for nostalgia…

Have you run the PxEngine yet?

With V9 installed, it should fix up the drives.

Of course there is whining, to me time is money. That is why I appreciate your help. The procedure I went thru with the 9.0 on the XP was "What to do when your computer will not recognize your CD drives after installation." I did the regedit bit, etc. and after that, the computer did recognize the cd drives, but 9.0 did not. So 9.0 is loaded and useless. Thanks again Jim (I remember Adaptek 4.0 or whatever and had no problem with that or the subsequent versions.)

The root problem is that the 'missing drives' are actually a Microsoft issue (and Roxio takes the flak over it)

However, I don't really agree with you having to install RealPlayer - to me that is about the most pernicious piece of quasi-legitimate malware around

Hi--I tried that and it did not restore my CD roms. In addition to this problem, how do I load the program? Should I just flick it and use the Version 9.0? I do not want to screw the computer up, if you know what I mean. Also, Roxio send me a two page letter on how to restore the drives, but I am a CPA not a computer guru and doing all of the things they told me to do bothers me. My question to them is why should this be happening and how much time do you spend on a $30 program? IF this is a known problem, why wasn't there a fix told to me when I registered the program? Thank you for your interest. Jim

In addition to what Brendon said, if the full version of EMC9 (not the red box one) is version 9.1, it will NOT work with 2000 (no-one here knows why it happened but where 9.0 did work, the update to 9.1 won't)

What about the 9.0 version? It jammed my computer when I tried it a month or so ago??? Thanks for your interest. JIm

I was just pointing out how long I have used Roxio and its predecessors. did we have DVDs then?? And it worked from the get go.

No I have not used that pxengine program but will try.

Thanks

RealAudio disappeared from the WinXP when I discovered it had decided to change the rules for dialing out from "Never dial out" to "Always dial if there isn't a connection".

My computers are not allowed to go online unescorted. No malware is expected to call home.

I think you are a bit pompous. It is the IT's person function to warn of potential problems. I called local retail computer sales store with a service area and service person there also said people are starting to go away from Roxio and it can cause problems. He pointed out that there should not be that many fixes for a program to work--somewhat the same as the guy that got me up and running also said. When you have to have that many patches, it could cause problems to other programs. If you go back and read what the IT guy said, he was just stating facts--which were true facts. You had better realize two facts: You cannot just install Roxio 9.0 on your XP computer without a lot of suggested patches, and 2) Roxio should fix their program to work seamlessly on XP.

I wonder if I can ungrade to 9.1 or will this cause another round of potential fixes and take a lot of time to get working???

As I said Jim, the problem is with Microsoft's Windows. It doesn't just happen with Roxio software, it happens with Nero and many others. It's a weakness in the way Microsoft has implemented things, and they should fix it.

You should follow the detailed instructions Roxio has sent you. If 'doing all the things they told you to do' bothers you and you haven't a more technical friend who can help you, I think your only other way to fix this Microsoft fault is to reinstall XP.

Brendon

Thanks again...I wonder how much I should have to spend to correct a problem on a $30 program? We have an IT guy but to have him sit at my machine and do that stuff would cost more than $30. reinstalling XP is not an option to me--I do not want to have to reinstall all of the other programs I have on my computer.

So I will try what Roxio says. Do you think I will have a problem with the Ver 9.0 on the XP? Thanks--I really appreciate your time. If you have any tax questions.......
