buring to CD vs DVD

Please bear with me if this is a stupid question (Note the "newbie" next to my name)

 

I am working with a photoslide show and as a test, burned it to a CD (I did not have a DVD at the time) and when played on the TV, the picture (resolution) was terrible. Is this because I used a CD instead of a DVD? Want to make sure that is the fix before I buy DVDs to burn to or if it a setting in the resolution I need to fix.

Resolution for a VCD, is 352 X 240.

 

A DVD is 720 X 480.

 

Yes it will look better but never as sharp as it looks on your monitor.

Or 720 x 576 if in PAL region.
