EMC10 never finishes installing... 4 hours wasted

fearmore

Question

I've done everything in the messages in these forums trying to install EMC10 on a relatively clean, fast Vista PC, to no avail.

I've tried 3 times, and the outcome is always about 3 "status" bars and "Please wait while the Wizard installs Roxio Update Manager".

So far, I've downloaded and run the Windows Install Cleanup utility to remove DirectXserviceinstall and all Roxio/Sonic entries, I've cleaned out the registry for Roxio/Sonic, deleted all Roxio/Sonic Program Files folders and the various applicable User subfolders, emptied the recycle bin, checked for running services, restarted Vista.

I'm an older working guy, and the loss of an entire evening to what should be a mindless install is leaving me frustrated and ready to chew leather, Roxio!

How about a DEFINITIVE DESCRIPTION somewhere on the Roxio site about how to install your product? I'm using the boxed DVD version.

Peaved,

Fearmore

A problem with the disc is certaintly possible. What you could try, is to make a temp directory on your hard drive, then try copying the contents of the disc to that folder and run the install from there.

Good suggestion. However, the results were exactly the same, even letting it run overnight.

I think 7 hours of my time (and dozens of my computer's) is enough, especially to install a boxed product. I'm returning Roxio Easy Media Creator 10 because it never completes installing.

By the way, the advice I got from tech support was atrocious -- despite pointing them to exactly what I'd done to date, they asked me what I'd done to date. For this, I waited 24 hours?

Bye.

Clean Install is listed Here.

Print it out and follow it to the letter!

This is exactly what I did, to the letter. Twice. In addition, as I said, I uninstalled DirectXserviceinstall, per instructions from Roxio Chat technical support (a step which is NOT contained in the link above).

Both times, EMC10 install stalled as I described above. (I waited an hour for it to terminate on its own and I have a stable, fast quad core 500 GB drive system.) I had to abort the hung install via Task Manager.

As a special bonus, each time I restarted Vista and then launched System Restore, Vista couldn't find the restore points in the hive. (Oh, great!) So I was forced to use the System Repair disk to access the System Restore point I'd created just prior to the EMC10 install and crash. After restore, my system worked fine again, System Restore came up perfectly, etc.

Nightmarish work for a simple install. I had EMC8 on my machine for quite some time, which is probably related to "the problem".

We are headed toward The Review From Hell on Amazon, where I purchased the boxed version, I'm afraid.

P.S. Last wild a** guess: is it possible that a scratched install disk might cause the symptoms I see rather than notifying me of a read problem? I see a faint whisk on the disk...

Interesting commentary as I recently upgraded from a pre-installed Roxio DE (9) to Creative Suite 10. I also had similar "hang-up" difficulties which after a substantial amount of time, did indeed result in a complete installation. After a sigh of relief, I discovered that unlike the previous DE system, I could no longer create DVDs (installation error 80041040). An uninstall/reinstall assisted by the Roxio Chat system (very helpful I might add), nicely resulted in elimination of the installation error, however- now I have an MPEG-2 activiation problem which when attempting online activation (as recommended by the system) results in a MSFT "send error report message that the RoxWizardLauncher Module has encountered problems and most be closed". I've advised Roxio support via email and anticipate a quick resolution.

How long did you allow the system to attempt installation? I too stopped installation the first couple of times (as you note). After cleaning up the system. I tried again. As noted. an inordinate amount of time- (i.e., aprx 15 minutes for the final 3%) to complete the install but, it did eventually complete-

Good luck-

Dan
