Creator 10 DVD Writing Problems

MackemMan

Question

I have just bought Creator 10 to run on my Dell Dimension 8300 (3+ years old) but cannot get the DVD writer to work when running MyDVD. I had the message "Drive is empty". The preview seems fine.

To test it further I set up a simple video file from a recognised source & tried to get Sonic to write a DVD but got the message "There is no media inside the recording device". Of course there was - and I tried various DVDs (both R & RW)

I also tried ImgBurn & got the message "Medium not present" although it did find the device.

However the same drive has successfully written CDs & reads DVDs quite happily, it is just writing DVDs where it falls down.

I have followed the easy advice - Firmware Revision, fixes, NVIDIA video card drivers etc but nothing works.

Having a decent but by no means detailed technical knowledge I am getting out of my depth & am considering drastic action - buying an external DVD writer. If I do which DVD writer is known to work with Creator 10?

All help much appreciated. Better to get my PC to work but would seriously consider buying an external drive if I could be sure it would work.

Cheers

You're right Walt.

Kenshin, one of the CDFreaks gurus who's usually very credible, writes here (link)

Impress reported about the availability of Teac DV-58E for under 7,000 Yen, cheaper than NEC ND-2510A available for US$68 in Malaysia.

The DV-58E can write only to DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-R, and CD-RW, and not to DVD-R, DVD-R, and DVD-RW, but it still does DVD+R DL at 2.4x making it the cheapest possible DVD+R DL burner in the world.

What is the make/model of your existing burner? Have you ever been able to burn DVDs with it, data or otherwise?

The CD / DVD writer is integrated into the Dell PC. Having checked its profile it says "Standard CD-Rom Drive". Its reference is TEAC DVD-RW DV-58E.

I have successfully used it to write data & music CDs and also to watch movies on DVD. I have never attempted to write DVDs until now - and it cannot.

I told you I was getting out of my technical depth.

You could try removing it via Device Manager, rebooting, and see if it works. Or, you could go to the Dell forums, and post about the problems with your drive.

What kind of DVDs have you used? I believe (after googling for "DV58E") I found a post that stated it will only burn DVD+R/RW. It did not mention -R/RWs.
