Audio/Video out of Sync after Transfer to .DV

drtst17

Question

I'm new at this but I am trying to transfer a bunch of old home videos into imovie. The footage is on DVD's, which I imported into Toast 8.03 using media browser, then I export to the hard drive as DV files. The DVD's are about an hour each (12 GB). After the transfer, if I play them in quicktime or in imovie, the audio lags behind by about 10 secs for most of the footage. I also noticed that the video will go to a purple screen at some point while the audio continues, then once the video comes back, it is out of sync. This does not happen if just watching the DVD's before I use Toast. I tried changing different things in Toast but nothing seems to fix it. Is there something I'm doing wrong, or is there another program I should be using? Thanks

I bought MPEG Streamclip and it worked great, the audio and video are in perfect sync, thanks for the help! Also, is there any way to improve the quality of the recordings on import or before transferring to imovie?

Thanks

You say these are old home movies that were converted to DVD. That's when the video processing to improve quality should have been done. Still, there's only so much that can be done with old home movies. You might check the iMovie forums at discussions.apple.com about what people do to enhance picture quality.

What was used to record the DVDs? Something you might try is to use MPEG Streamclip to "Fix Timecode breaks" and then "Convert to MPEG." Then add that MPEG video to Toast for conversion to DV. I also think MPEG Streamclip can export to DV as well.

Another application that takes a different approach to keeping the audio and video in sync for DV export is Cinematize. I don't know if a trial version is available at the miraizon.com site.
