OEM and Editing Home DVD

Jessy

Question

Hi. I am new to Roxio and am having difficulty in understanding how to take an hour and a half home DVD and use only 'hightlights'.

I have a new laptop, Compaq Presario and have completed a straight DVD copy of my home movie but I would now like to do a series of highlights to collate for family for Xmas. I have managed to copy the

video_ts folder to my harddrive. I then go to MYDVD and add movie which I then locate the .ifo or .vob file (either one will allow me to input the complete video). Now this is where I start to get confused. I go to edit movie and in there I found 'trim'. I select my start and finish times and it looks great - exactly what I want but when I go to preview it starts off back at the beginning whereas in the storyline I can see what I have 'trimmed'. So I thought maybe it doesn't show you your 'trim' file and went ahead and tried to burn to CD in the hope that it would work. An error saying 80004005 while encoding came up. I have read and read and searched and searched and am now just totally stumped! Would this be because it is an OEM? If anyone could help I would be most greatful. Maybe there is a much easier way to do it. I also don't think I have the videowave part. Thank you.

Hi. I have had success/failure! Ok I kept watching the video (which I had done in the past) and everything seemed what I was doing. The preview would still show the complete video, not the cut version. I can not seem to delete the proxy files and I can not locate them via explorer, although I checked the path it said. All this using my VIDEO_TS folder using either .vob or .iso. So I thought I would give another file a turn - I used a sample video that came with the laptop, which is of course a lot smaller. My cut and delete worked - it shows the cut version when I preview. I have not attempted burning DVD as it would be a waste at this stage. Do you have any other suggestions for me? (very very much appreciated all your help).

Regards Jessy.

You have never mentioned the name of the program/programs that you are using… Each one has its' own name listed in the top of the screen. Without knowing the details of what and how you are doing something, no one can help you…

For example, if you are in MyDVD and select Edit, it will take you to VideoWave. Any edits you apply will be seen when you go back to MyDVD.

If you EXIT MyDVD or otherwise enter VideoWave and apply edits to a clip, they will never show in MyDVD unless you delete and reload the clip!!!

So you get two completely different reactions depending on when and what you do!

While this may seem confusing and even bizarre to a beginner there is solid reason for this behavior.

Utilities> Media Import, MyDVDExpress, Slideshow Assistant

Any more help would be extremely greatful.

Thanks, that is the same thing I have with a new HP laptop. It is really basic. No VideoWave there.

Did you try the other thing I suggested?

Edit: I just tried using the basic to trim the start and end of a movie. I was unable to dupplicate your issue.

Hi again. Thanks for your help. I have tried what you said. It will not let me delete the proxy file.

I also can see storyline and timeline and when I click on preview at the top in either mode, it plays it all. In the storyline I can see my cut version but in the working screen above I see the complete video as well as in the preview.

In the timeline I can see the blue bit and I have tried to delete and play around with but nothing seems to work right unless I am doing something wrong. I have tried split and tiim. It shows only the small 'cut' verison I want but preview shows it all!

Well, I think I am going to look into another program to use! I tried adding all the .ifo and .vob files under the video_ts folder and as always it would come up with another screen (weather I added one, two or the complete six files) that has 'Import Movies From VOB' and under that it lists 'movie 1' 'movie 2' both an hour and 20 long which is how long this DVD is. I have selected one as well as two. If I select both it has 2 hours 40 and puts two separate files (menus) which I have tried both editing with the same results. If I select just 1 movie same result. I have tried randomly adding different .iso and .vob files. Again same result!

As for the Proxy files. That is where I were going both in the editing part and the first menu. It does not appear to allow me to clear. I have tried highlighting and clicking clear. I have tried highlighting and pressing delete button. I have tried not highlighting and clicking clear, pressing delete. It does not look like anything happens!

I have already started looking for another program but it would have been good to get this one working properly considering it came with my laptop! I don't want to call Compaq/HP help line as they are absolutely terrible as I had another problem which I ended resolving on my own and making a complaint to them as they kept insisting I factory reset which I refused as I had done one a week earlier to replace yet another problem - my faulty hard drive! (The first problem was sorted without factory reset!)

Therefore I am left with looking at another program and purchasing it when I can afford it. Oh well.... looks like I'll be doing something else for xmas gifts!

Thanks for all your time. Jessy Jules

To clear the proxy files, you simply click Tools/Option and then on the window that opens, click Clear (see image below). There is nothing to highlight or delete.

Of course all your problems may be because your have an OEM version which may have a lot of the features of the full retail version disabled.

Jessy

After you trimmed or split, did you delete what you didn't want?

Watch the video about cutting out a section to see if that helps.

Stretch the timeline by using the slider to the right to expand the time frame.

How did you try to delete the proxy files? Remember that they are immediately rebuilt with the correct information. Also shutting down and restarting will delete and rebuild.

I also don't think I have the videowave part.

Unfortunately, all the lite versions seem to be different so it is hard to tell you what to try. Go to the Home Application page and post the applications and utilities you have there (if there are only a few). Perhaps we can give you some advice.

The only thing I can think of off hand is that when you are trimming the movie, there are some remnants left from the trim. Do you have the options to look at the video in storyline view? If so, do you see any blank or black panels before or after the video you want to use? Also, I'm known for suggestion that you try deleting the proxy files. Go to the top menu, select tools, options and then delete the files. Don't worry you won't lose anything since they will immediately be rebuilt with only the latest information in the project.

Is your crystal ball broken?? LOL. I open Roxio>MyDVD Basic 9> Add new movie> Open Video_ts folder where I import either the .ifo or .vob file. I then Edit Movie which opens a new window with storyline, timeline etc; this is where I try to cut, split etc. It has MyDVD9 *filename* (DVD) at the top.

It will split a samples videos that came with the laptop but not mine.

Thanks again and again for all the help!

Are you adding both the ifo and the vob files? Is it possible that you may have added a second copy of the video as an overlay? If so, if you cut and delete parts of the video (either the overlay or the main track), you might still see the untrimmed video.

I don't have any other suggestions.

Something bothers me about an earlier post. You said the program will not allow you to delete the proxy files. In MyDVD, did you go to the top menu, select tools, options and simply press the clear button next to the proxy file ? Don't worry if it immediately comes back. It was deleted and rebuilt. The same thing happens when you shut down the program and reopen it.
