So there I was, happily using myDvd LE that came with my Dell computer when I finally hit on something it wouldn't do for me. It wouldn't let me reorder the buttons on my menu.
So I bit the bullet and bought EMC 10.
GADZOOKS!!!! 700+MB download, even with DSL it took nearly 3 hours. Had you warned me of the size before hand I would have bought the boxed version. Add a point for annoying me with a huge download.
So now I have this thing installed, only I have to install the latest video drivers too. Not too much of a problem, but still annoying, myDVD LE didn't make me do that. So add another point for annoyance.
The program is sluggish and slow, and that's on a dual core Dell with oodles of disk space and a gig of ram.
Ok, I'm used to buying software online. What I'm not used to, is a complex program like this that contains little to no documentation. No PDF based manual, no txt file. Nothing. This is like moving from MS Paint to Photoshop and hoping things are intuitive enough to use as is. Nope, add another annoyance point.
I've burned a few disks and then tonight I tried to burn another one. Only I ran into troubles with the thing. Hey, the same error that forced me to download new video drivers. Who would have thought my video drivers expired that quickly? Nope. Closed out a video converter program I was using and it started working again. Talk about explanatory error messages.
Imagine going to the doctor and when you ask what's wrong he replies with 8004520C. Then he smiles and says well if you want it explained, it will cost you a buck eighty nine per minute to talk to someone.
Finally I got the new disk burned. Only menu item one is going to the intro video instead of chapter one. Everything LOOKS like it should be right. Button one says play chapter one. I don't get it. Maybe the machine pop up a message like 100578430BG. That will explain it all I'm sure.
And what is with the cheaping out on the menu styles. You only include five of them with the program, then sell more at 30 bucks per five. Nickel and diming people only pisses them off.
For the most part, EMC 10 does what I want it to do, but it doesn't do it well. It will serve my purpose but it's not a program I will grow to enjoy like Photoshop, or any of my other tools. Hopefully I'll be able to find something better out there and consign this to the great dev/null in the sky.
Frankly I don't think I'd recommend it to anyone either. I'm disappointed, myDvd LE was more fun to use than this.
