Spyware bundled with EMC 10?

rjg

Question

Downloaded EMC 10. Running the executable file triggers immediately the installation of Spyware Bot 1.5 or some such name. My previous spyware program, SpyBot, declares the new spyware program to be a malicious program and highly advises to delete it. Deleting it halts installation of EMC 10.

I don't see any option to skip installation of the Spyware Bot 1.5.

Is this a normal installation of EMC 10? Or has the installation file been somehow compromised?

I now notice a desktop icon for SpywareBot even though I aborted it's installation (and that of EMC).
Right click on the ICON and choose Properties to see where that install executable is located. Then use Windows Explorer to delete it.

To be safe, then scan your computer with the spybot software that you own and even do a manual virus check. If everything looks clean, THEN try installing EMC 10. Some of those malwares are really difficult to get rid of when you do get them, but to our knowledge, it did not come in the EMC 10 downloaded file.

EMC10 does not install any spyware or trojan virures. Some virus scanners have reported false positives in EMC but there's nothing there to be concerned about.

I've never seen any installation of Spyware Bot or similar but have seen it ask if you want the Google Toolbar installed. Did you download the file from Roxio?

I somehow think you should look at the settings on your malware scanner. Most of them (if you have realtime protection turned on) will detect registry changes and warn accordingly - it's a pain in the posterior, so follow the standard advice on ALL program installations (the bit nobody ever bothers to read)

TURN OFF ANY RUNNING PROGRAMS ON INSTALLATION

And that INCLUDES spyware scans, anti-virus, instant messengers and so on - all DOES mean ALL

Yes, file downloaded from Roxio...file name RoxioEMCSuitev10_4737GA50R05.exe

First action is unzipping a slew of files then pops right into installation of SpyWare Bot v. 1.5.

I don't have SpyWare Bot installed on my computer. The installation launches as a part of EMC 10 which is very puzzling?

Please - read what was posted

TURN OFF RUNNING APPS WHEN YOU INSTALL

There is NO spyware in the Digital River download

If you really want to check the download file - right click on it and 'open with' winrar (available here ) and look at the files. Run setup.exe to install

Okay, I obviously have not yet conveyed the problem. In my opening post I used the phrase "Spyware bundled with EMC 10?" I should have said "Anti Spyware Software". Apparently that is what "Spyware Bot v1.5 is. I have not yet continued with the installation when it launches its installation apparently as a part of EMC 10 installation. I say this because if I abort the installation of Spyware Bot v1.5, the EMC 10 installation also terminates. I have two anti spyware apps on my computer....SpyBot and Ad Aware. (In looking to see the exact names of these two, I now notice a desktop icon for SpywareBot even though I aborted it's installation (and that of EMC).

I did look in every folder and at every file in the .exe file designated above and found only Google toolbar mentioned....nothing recognizable about anything having to do with anti-spyware software.

The events do not indicate that Digital River have spyware in their download. Rather, the indication is that there is some ANTI spyware program within or associated...many things might be attempted in what was nearly a 3 hour download. Possibly this program is really spyware posing as anti-spyware. Before continuing I will see what I can find out about it on Google.

No apps running during installation is a standard. What I (as an uneducated non-guru) consider to be a running app and what you know to be a running app may not necessarily be the same.

Thanks for your help.
