Another Toast 8.3 question

daleslad

Question

Hi, I have just purchased Toast 8 on a CD and run into some problems trying to load the new upgrade version 8.0.3

The first thing that happened after I had entered the CD Key and clicked next was that it asked for an Authentication Password which I took to mean my Admin password.

I entered my password a number of time but each time it refused it.

I then thought maybe it meant my Roxio site password so I entered that but that didn't work either.

I searched the help topics but couldn't find anything and went back and tried again this time my password worked.

It's only 4 digits and they are all the same so I know I was entering it correctly.

Another thing that happened was when I tried to drag the new 8.0.3 app. into the 8.0.1. I get a message saying "A newer Toast already exists do you really want to replace the new on with the old one.

I didn't understand why it was saying that but I went ahead any way and dragged it over.

When I tried to continue on to complete the upgrade it said I didn't have enough privileges or something like that and I couldn't proceed any further.

I must say that it I'm not very happy so far about the way this purchase is working out and I haven't even used it yet.

Thanks lakewoodlawnman, I'd be quite happy though right now if I could the 8.0 version to work.

Toast has nothing to do with privileges. That is entirely and OS function. If you are prompted for a password, the prompt is coming from the OS, not Toast. I am just adding this as clarification that this is not a Toast related issue and not something that we have any control over whether or not it happens.

1) When you copy Toast 8.0.3 over 8.0, it will ask you if you want to replace the old toast with the new one. This is the correct function of the OS.

2) When you write things to certain locations (during the initial launch of toast we put things in several spots such as system preferences) and in some cases the OS may need to authenticate (prompt for password) to confirm you have the correct access to complete the process.

Both of the above are normal OS functions and should be happening.

Thanks John for your information and I would tend to agree with you however the message I got when I tried to copy Toast 8.0.3 over 8.0 was not the way you would expect it to be. Instead it asked if I wanted to replace the new with the old.

I have often been prompted for my admin password when loading new programs but I've never been told that I don't have the right privileges and after reading the other posts I am not the only one that experienced this while trying to load Toast 8.0.3.

Sorry to hear this has been such a pain. The updating should have worked as you expected.

The authentication is a Mac OS action so your difficulty with it wasn't caused by Toast. If you're like me you might have set the caps lock key.

I can't find it now but someone else pointed out that dragging the update in place of the older version gave the wrong message as to which one is newer. Regardless of that message, version 8.0.3 is the newest.

The privileges issue is a new one to me. I presume you're the Mac's administrator account. You actually can have both the previous and new versions of Toast on your Mac at the same time, so just install the new version to a different place in your Applications folder and proceed to use it. You can delete the older version as long as you check to make sure you've kept any of the bundled applications that aren't part of the Toast update download.

Thanks tsantee, it is possible that I might have had the caps lock key on, I had been using it to enter the CD unlock code.

I think that the Privileges issue might be what is also called Permissions on a Mac so I have verified and repaired the Permissions and will try to upgrade again soon.

I want to check out the 8.0 version for awhile to see what if any differences there may be before I upgrade to the 8.0.3 version.

The biggest difference is that 8.0.3 is Leopard compatible.
