Brian - you could do worse than the Hauppage TV card which will also take an input from your VCR (and let you watch analogue broadcasts on the computer as well)

Try Dabs for it here

It will set you back all of 23 quid

Or, if you want a dual digital one - this is a bit dearer (about 54 quid but it lets you record one FreeView channel while you watch another)

I've a very old Hauppage PCI card here (dating from about 4 upgrades ago) and it still works well (it's analogue but it also does teletext) - no remote or anything fancy but it's never given me any bother in all the years I had it

Beerman advised the Hauppauge. I have the Hauppauge WinTV PVR PCI II in this HP computer I purchased a year ago. I transferred a bunch of old vcr tapes with it to use in Videowave and burn to DVD with no problems. I have no problems with the quality, although I'm not a professional. Also, like gi7omy pointed out, you can receive and record TV programs, which still amazes me.

While recording to tv is a huge bonus, keep in mind that most of the capture cards out today don't handle HD content at all. And the ones that do, likely only handle OTA HD.

I record all my tv with my dual tuners and either burn to dvd to watch or watch later via a MediaMVP but this can also be done with other extenders. So, getting a separate tuner is useful for more than just transferring VHS to Digital.

Thanks! Those are good points. I need to learn more about HD. My cable box is now a DVR so I have been recording to that lately (new toy and all).

Looks like it will be the Hauppauge route I will be taking.

As I said I only need it to transfer VCR to digital easily, so the TV aspect will be a bonus.

Thanks for the input guys.

I want to start converting a load of VCR tapes to digital so I can run them through EMC 9.

Can I have some suggestions for hardware that will do the job.

Thanks.

You can't beat Hauppauge for the price IMO. If you have a camcorder, you should be able to use it as a pass-through but nothing is as easy and quick as buying a combo VCR/DVD recorder if you have the money.

A good place for free advice is www.videohelp.com. Lots of ideas there.

What about "Dazzle" type hardware?

Sure thing, Dazzle is very popular but many have had problems with Vista drivers. I'd check the Pinnacle forums for updated info. They've released updated drivers but I tried the Dazzle in XP and was underwhelmed. Still, it's an option that is widely used.
