Extracting Music from Audio CDs

TigerRed17

Question

My apologies if this has been discussed before, but --

In previous versions of Toast, one could drag an audio file from a CD into the Toast interface without an immediate extraction taking place.

Now, in Toast 8 for Macintosh, dragging an audio file into the Toast interface starts an immediate extraction into RAM. The user now has to wait until all of the songs are extracted before re-arranging a playlist.

Is there a preference to avoid immediate extractions? I really dislike the way Toast 8 now does this. Bad move by Roxio, in my opinion.

Please help -- and thanks in advance!!

Unfortunately no. This could be a reason to keep Toast 7 around. The reason for the change is that Toast 8 adds most of the features of Jam 6. In order to do the normalizing and other effects Toast has to have the extracted files to work with rather than just pointers to the tracks on disc.

Thank you for the info! I have kept my old copy of Toast around for this reason. Do the effects (normalization, crossfades) need to be rendered? I haven't had much success using crossfades at all.

From what I've seen the normalizing is applied at the time it is selected while the other effects must be on-the-fly during recording.

Maybe I can help with the crossfades. I usually choose the custom setting so I can manually adjust start and end points and preview the result. Also, it sometimes is necessary to do track trimming if there is some silence at the end or start of a track. This is done by clicking on the track's length and selecting track trim.
