Reading/Converting DVD File

scorpi3048

Question

I have a Canon DC40 camcorder with which I did a direct connect into the OEM version of MyDVD. The file was saved as a DVD file and could only be opened with MyDVD. However, I am trying to put together a compilation of videos that I've taken over the past year, and while MyDVD would read the file individually (I could watch it and edit it), it would not let me add it to the other videos (citing a bad file format). So I figured (hoped) that this was an error due to the OEM version of the software. I just upgraded to EMC 10, but I'm still having a problem getting the software to recognize this file. I even tried to use the convert utility to get it into something readable, but the convert utility doesn't see this video either.

To add insult to injury, the new version of MyDVD won't even open this file so I can view it!

Any suggestions?

No, it didn't import into Windows MovieMaker because the .DVD extension isn't supported. Here's what Roxio customer service is recommending, but it will take HOURS:

Please perform a clean install according to the instructions below.

The following steps will completely remove any Roxio and Sonic software from your computer.

Note, you will need or installation media (Download or CD) to reinstall your software.

1) If you are using Windows Vista, please turn it off with the instructions below.

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/e...1bf0dc1033.mspx

2) Once that is completed please disable your startup applications using MSCONFIG. This will disable any unnecessary background or system tray applications from loading.

* Click on the 'Start' button and select 'Run'. (Windows Vista users do a 'Windows Key + R' instead)

* Select the Startup tab.

* Click the Disable All button.

* Select the Services tab.

* Click the 'Hide all Microsoft Services' box

* Click the Disable All button.

* Click the Apply, then the OK buttons and choose to restart when prompted. If you get a message that 'the program maybe blocked', choose 'Allow'.

NOTE: If you are unable to start msconfig, it can be found in the directory Computer --> Local Disc (C:) --> Windows --> System 32. You may need to right click the msconfig and choose Open as Administrator.

To reverse this just go back in and click enable all and restart (that can be done once installation is complete)

3) Download the Microsoft Windows Installer Clean Up Utility to your desktop and install to remove Roxio and Sonic software. Go to http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9...1bd/msicuu2.exe

* Scroll down to and click on 'Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility package now.'

* Click on Save and choose to save it on your Desktop.

* On your Desktop, double-click on msicuu2.exe file and follow the on-screen instructions to install

*** Note, If you are using Windows Vista you must right click on the file and select 'Run as Administrator' to get it to install without errors. ***

* Click on Start -> All programs -> Windows Install Clean up

* Select Roxio Easy Media Creator or any entry started with Roxio or Sonic.

* Click on Remove.

* Select (IF PRESENT) DirectXInstallService, EMC10 Content and SmartSound QuickTracks Plugin

* Click on Remove.

4) Clean your temp files:

A) Please go to your Windows Start Menu and select run, in the run box type 'temp' without the quotes and hit enter, a window should apear, delete as many of the files in that directory as ppossible. Any files that are still in use will be locked by windows, just work around them. This is OK. When that is done close the window. Please go to step 2, note it is almost identical, so dont be confused.

B) Please go to your Windows Start Menu and select run, in the run box type '%temp%' without the quotes and hit enter, a window should apear, delete as many of the files in that directory as ppossible. Any files that are still in use will be locked by windows just work around them. This is OK. When that is done close the window.

5) Make hidden files and folders viewable (VISTA)

1. Click start button on Windows Vista

2. Click Control Panel

3. Click Folder Options (if you dont see folder options switch to classic view in control panel)

4. Click the View tab

5. Click Show hidden files and folders

6. Unclick Hide protected operating system files

7. Click OK

Make hidden files and folders viewable (XP)

This can be done by clicking on 'My Computer' , go up and click on tools, then folder options. then 'View'.

Make sure 'Show Hidden Files and Folders' is checked and click apply.

6) Delete these folders from your hard drive.

NOTE: When trying this step you may receive a message that a 'file is in use'. Simply drag that file to your desktop and it can be removed after restarting the computer. Also note that 'Username' referred to below is the name you use when logging into Windows Vista.

Go to Start, then select 'My Computer' and Then find your drive (usualy 'Local Drive C:) and delete these directories.

*** IF any files or folders will not delete, simply drag these items to your destop and delete after your next reboot ***

C:\Program Files\Roxio

C:\Program Files\Sonic

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic Shared

+

Empty the recycle bin once the steps above are completed.

7) Remove these keys from the registry:

WARNING: THE NEXT STEP INVOLVES EDITING YOUR SYSTEM REGISTRY. WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU EXPORT YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY EDITING. EDITING YOUR REGISTRY INCORRECTLY CAN CAUSE IRREPARABLE SYSTEM DAMAGE.

To export a copy of your registry, please do the following

* Click on Start --> Run 'regedit' in the box and press enter on your keyboard.

* Locate and left click File in the upper left hand corner of the Registry editor.

* Click Export (Export range 'All' should be selected).

* Choose a location on your hard drive and give the file a name.

* Click Save. Your registry should now be backed up in a .reg file to the location you specified

Registry Edit instructions:

Click on Start --> Type 'regedit' in the Search field and press Enter.(Windows Vista users do a 'Windows Key + R' instead)

* Double-click the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder this will expand or open the folder.

* Locate the Software folder.

* Locate the Roxio folder.

* Right click on Roxio and click delete.

* Do the same for the Sonic folder (if present).

* Close the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder.

Do the same for the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder.

* Double-click the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder this will expand or open the folder.

* Locate the Software folder

* Locate the Roxio folder

* Right click on Roxio and click delete.

* Do the same for the Sonic folder (if present).

* Close the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder.

8) Restart the computer then reinstall your Roxio product.

If the information provided does not resolve your issue simply update your webticket with a detailed explanation with the steps you have tried and any error messages you receive.

Has anyone tried this before?

That camcorder records to MiniDVD's. You need to finalize the disc in your camcoder, then take the disc, put it in your computer DVD drive, and copy the contents of the miniDVD, to a folder you make on your hard drive. When you make that folder, name it something that has to do with what is on the DVD.

You can then open VideoWave, click on File, then on New Production, then on 16:9, if that is what setting you used to do your video work.

Then click on Add Photo/Video, browse to the Video_TS folder that is in the folder you made, and bring in all of the .vob files. You can now edit them.

Also, with your video camcorder, you should be doing your video taping in the XP mode setting to get the best quality video.
