Getting ready to upgrade to Creator 10 from 9

jlove

Question

Ok, I know I'm a glutton for punishment... but I decided to purchase Creator 10. The reason I put it this way is that I had a hellacious time the last time I did an upgrade--from 8 to 9. I had the infamous "CD/DVD drive disappears from the machine" problem. By the time I was done with the various suggested fixes, I wound up at the computer store and needed a full reinstall of my O/S--lost a couple of days and a couple hundred dollars. (Yes, I know how to reinstall the O/S myself, but after I spent half a day futzing with the 9 install and wondering if I would ever see some of my data again, I decided to let someone else take care of me.)

That's a pretty clean install, I guess. <_<

So, I've paid my upgrade fee and downloaded the software to my hard drive, and I guess it's time to go through this all over again. Looking over some of these posts, I am astonished that with all the troubles reported with installing 9, some of the same issues seem to be plaguing 10. Why can't Roxio write a decent installer?

Yes, I do have questions for this group. What is the recommended install path? One post I read suggested that you can install 10 in addition to 9. That avoids the need to de-install 9 (and as near as I can tell, such perplexing problems as disappearing drives seem to occur as a result of the uninstall process). But other posts suggest that the best course is a "clean install" which involves eradicating all Roxio programs and services.

There seem to be three major avenues, and I'm trying to figure out which one to take:

1) Do nothing with 9 and run the installer for 10.

2) Do a normal deinstall of 9 (using add/remove programs), then install 10.

3) Do a "clean install" by downloading MS clean install, deleting folders and registry keys associated with version 9 before installing 10.

One thing I will be doing before anything else is a full backup and a system checkpoint.

All advice gratefully received.

On the system I use most (see sig) I did do a clean install of 9 first then 10 however, on another system that is somewhat similar, I left 9 on and installed 10 with no problems. In fact, I had some problems in XP where I had absolutely none in Vista--go figure.

I guess the real question might be what is it you want to do and will just v10 do it for you or will you need v9 as well as 10? I like Disc Copier and wished they wouldn't have changed it in 10 to Video Copy and Convert.

What OS are you running?

Absolute Nonsense!

There is absolutely nothing in the instructions for clean install that deletes dmsm photo or video files!

If yours are gone it is because you went out of your way to delete them!

Sir,

Your inexcusable rudeness has no place on this learning forum. I won't dignify your lack of good manners with a response.

Lexabob and ypt, and anyone else, for that matter. Make a folder, outside of the Roxio software, and OUTSIDE of Documents and settings, for your saved .dmsm and .dmsd productions. I actually have mine on a different hard drive than the one my OS and Roxio are on.

If you have any trouble, with the program, in the future, which necessitates a reinstallation of the Roxio software, you productions are untouched.

Thank you Bruce for your informed response. Could not understand how all those files got deleted from the default location. A difficult way to learn this lession but one that hopefully others will lean from if they read your response.

I call a spade a spade, and in your case…

OK I installed EMC 10 and I am still waiting for my files to disappear. I assume it will happen during the night within the first week or so???

I had 2919 files (jpg, mpg, dmsm, mdsd, cpf & dmss) on my PC before I installed EMC 10.

I now have 3630 files (same list) for a net gain of 711 files. I lost nothing!

Default directory shows not change whatsoever…

Oh my God what a mess. I thought I had a handle on this from the other upgrades I did on several previous versions of EMC but this was my worst nightmare. I am getting a tatoo in the morning that says "you were an idiot to upgrade to 10". I will never forget this.

The installation"clean" appeared to go like a dream. Then the restart was a horror show. All of my dmsm files were missing all kinds of photos, video, audio and whatever else there could be missing. I had several projects in progress and 10 was looking for missing files in appdata\roxio\videowave9\images. Of course those files were all deleted in the clean install and then the recycle bin was dumped per instructions. I can get dmsd creations to play on My dvd but it is also looking for files. Previous dmsm files will not move to MYDVD period. Crashes? roxiocentral.36.exe is my worst enemy. I tried a clean start in video wave and it took it so far. I went on to my dvd and messed with a new production but did not try a burn yet.

I don't know what to do with the works in progress??? I tried to copy the files to a new production to at least salvage the video/audio portions from a total rework but the new production with those old filesis still finds tons missing and wont let me bypass the missing data? By the way I have tripple check all of the photo/video files and nothing is missing, and the missing files 10 is looking for is not in the production.

I am going insane. If I can only hope that by removing 10 and reverting back to 9 that I can at least restore a working program I would just let it go at that. Any help at all????

I think Jack's questions are great!!! Beerman as I understood his response feels it is a coin toss on any given Sunday. Anybody see"No Country for Old Men"? I hope it is tails to leave 9 on because that is what I am going to do. I have every version from 6 to 9 and each installation has been a challenge from, clean to leave it on. I think Roxio gets it's Roxios off waiting in the bushes for its community to self grenade with their installation programs. This process should be done blind folded instead of perpetually being a pilgrimage to the Holy landl. I will see what happens in the morning. I need the night to gain strength for the ordeal. God bless and I will let you know the results.

I have EMC 7.5, 9, and 10 on my computer, and they have gotten along, just fine, near as I can tell.

I'm running XP SP2. I use Disk Copier a lot, and this is the first I've heard that v10 has different (inferior?) capabilities to 9, so maybe I should wait a bit before installing 10.

Can you (or any other contributors) let me know what I might miss if I switch to "Video Copy and Convert" from Disk Copier?

What sort of problems did you have with your XP install?

Thanks for taking the time.

The problems I had were only on 1 system that I installed v10 on and it showed that the install was complete but it was not. It only installed certain parts of 10. I then removed all pieces of versions 9 & 10, did a clean install putting on v9 first then v10 and it was then successful.

Disc Copier in 9 could easily copy a cd where VC&C cannot as it only deals with Video. You can still do so in v10 with Copy Disc. In both v9 and 10, there are a few parts of each that allow you do basically do the same thing with different parts of the program. I think of it as the Sonic side and Roxio side that they both bring to their 'marriage'.

I would like to leap to the defence of "lexabob" a fellow newbie - I have updated my 7.5 to 10 (by uninstalling 7.5 and installing 10 - this was suggested in various postings on the site as a safe way because of all the update problems) and all the dmsm files from the 7.5 default location have disappeared from the computer (luckily most were backed up in a seperate location) - the old files are not even in the recycle bin ( and I don't automatically empty mine).

As a very new newcomer to the forum and at the risk of being ostracised I would like to ask James if it is normal for "gurus" to be so aggressive in their replies to newbies - after all we all have to start somewhere.

And it deleted photo and video files too???

The "default" location for dmsm files is My Documents. It does not delete them nor will it scramble the clock in your microwave or reprogram your VCR…

You are the only 2 that "claim" to have seen this. Don't you think it might have showed up in the thousands of installs that have taken place in the 4 months it has been out???

Sorry, not buying your story!

Well, I can now report the end to my personal start of this thread. After reading a few more posts as well as some of the stuff posted in the Roxio knowledge base, I decided to forego the "clean install" and just run a normal install of Roxio 10 on top of 9.

Before doing this, I backed up my hard disk and created system checkpoints so that if I ran into any of the horror show stuff I would hopefully be able to get back to my starting position. But that has turned out to be unnecessary.

The Roxio 10 installer informed that it needed to uninstall a couple of my Roxio 9 modules, which it took care of for me. The install then proceeded. I rebooted my computer and lo and behold, Roxio 10 was there and so far everything I have tried to do has worked.

There was one odd blip, which I will report in a new thread in the "how-to" category, but it wasn't a serious problem. I haven't tried to do anything fancy yet, but at least I can say that v10 is running and the install did not damage my machine.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice, and my sympathies to those of you who did not have a smooth transition. For what it's worth, I do agree with what another poster mentioned--much of the turmoil being reported in this and similar threads is the result of Microsoft's horrendous support for developers. On Linux or Mac OS X, these kinds of problems are almost unheard of--for one thing, no other sensible O/S has created something as Satanic as the Window registry.

So you are confirming that it goes into My Documents and deletes all existing dmsm files???

And that it deletes picture and video clips during instillation???

Why hadn't you mentioned this before?

It won't delete pictures and video clips, but it does delete any Roxio productions, if you use the default location, that Roxio picks, for saving the files.

I have mentioned this many times, in the past.
