Microsoft security update cripples IE

Microsoft Corp. confirmed today that it is investigating reports that a security update for Internet Explorer issued last week has crippled some users' ability to get on the Web with the browser. Users started posting messages to multiple Microsoft support newsgroups almost immediately after Microsoft released the MS07-069 security bulletin on Dec. 11, saying that they were unable to connect to the Internet, either because IE refused to open or because when it did open, it could not reach various sites.

"About 60% of the time, I would get an 'Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and must close' dialog," reported Bill Drake on the Windows Update newsgroup. Others echoed those comments on IE-specific forums, noting that both IE6 and IE7 balked at loading, or while loading, some pages, particularly home pages, on both Windows XP and Windows Vista machines.

Harold Decker, operations manager at San Diego-based Gold Peak Industries NA Inc., started fielding calls from users last Wednesday morning as soon as people hit the office. "I stopped everyone who hadn't installed the update from installing it, after four PCs out of 14 had the problem," said Decker, who manages a total of 35 Windows XP SP2 machines. "We're a pretty plain shop; all our systems run Windows XP SP2 and IE6," said Decker. "But some kept crashing. It seemed limited to the window that was opened, and changing the home page to something simple, like a blank page, gave a better success rate."

I have 5 xp rigs and a dual boot MCE 2005 & Vista Ultimate.

All 5 XP rigs had the problem after the update. The MCE rig was not affected and I did not run the updates on Vista.

My problem with all the XP rigs: IE would crash upon load and offer to send an error report. The faulting module was urlmon.dll.

I uninstalled all the updates on one rig and re-installed them one by one rebooting and testing after each update. In my case, the culprit was KB942615 - Cumulative security update for IE6. Donno where MS07-069 comes from. The description of the update is the same though

I uninstalled only the above update from the rest of the XP rigs and everything was fine. Like I said, the MCE rig didn't have any problem after the update(s) so I donno.

For those experiencing this problem, MS has just published a workaround for IE6 on XP

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946627

As I did not have the problem, I can't test whether this works.

Thanks... I can confirm that the fix works. This is what I did:

Installed the update (KB942615)

Launched IE... Yep, crashed.

Did the reg mods

Rebooted the computer

Launched IE again... Works! :D

Installed the update & modded the registry on the rest of my rigs and they all work.

Funny thing is though... My MCE rig (which also dual boots Vista Ultimate) was not affected by the update but all the XP rigs were. MCE is XP with just some extras.

Gotta love computers... The weekend prior to "Patch Tuesday", I replaced my main router. I set up a Vista laptop that I bought for a Xmas gift and my router kept crashing. The router is an old Linksys BESW something or other (hit the trash today... garbage day), wireless with a 4 port switch. It was probably 4 - 5 years old. I did some research and Vista uses a different protocol which will lock up old routers.

So.... I thought my problems were due to the new router. I went nuts for hours and hours till I figured out it was one of the MS updates (not upgrades :P )

You know I can recall all the screaming about how it was all Roxio's fault when

XP SP2 trashed ECD5

IE7 and WMP11 trashed ECD and EMC up to EMC8

The NTLDR problem (which, despite not having been seen in beta or retail versions for a month just happened to coincide with another MS update)

The failure of EMC9 on the official release day of Vista - coinciding with a zero day update from MS

But hey, Redmond can do no wrong - can they?

You are just not going to give that one up.. Are you?

Check on it Barry - you'll find that the first reports of the problem just happened at the same time as one of MS's XP updates - coincidence maybe??

There are always MS updates... Even between "Patch Tuesday's"

Check the boards... There are new threads STILL reporting NTDLR problems. I'm sure that the posters bought the software off the shelf of the retailer and installed older Cd's DVDs, whatever.

See here is the thing...

The typical user buys his software at the store.. Can't wait to get home and install it. Bada-Bing. Computer won't boot after the install.

There is a "Patch" posted on this website... Problem is, too late.. Damage is already done. How can the user get the patch/update if their rig won't boot?

If it makes you feel better.. In testing the MS fix for KB942615, my rig crashed (IE), I had the opportunity to report the problem which I did (again). Now this time, they (MS) supply's a link after the error report which directs you to the information you need to modify your registry.

Problem here is that your browser no longer works to get to the information!!!

Chicken or egg... you pick it.

Where is John@Roxio... Ask him.... They (Roxio) were able to duplicate the problem and posted a fix. What was found? What did they do? The V10 update, what does it do?

Have a good holiday.

The update for 10 is for that ntldr problem - I'm not saying that there aren't probglems with the software - just pointing out the apparent coincidence of the very first occurence of the ntldr fault with EMC 10 coinciding EXACTLY with a MS update - it didn't happen before that date, but it really started to snowball after it
