Blu-ray video downscaled with analog output instead of HDMI

Martybees

Question

Don't think anyone has seen this effect:

I produced a Blu-ray (BD-R) with DVDit Pro HD which contains a simple menu and one video clip. Playback on a BD Player (e.g. SONY S500, SONY S300, PS3) works fine with HDMI output.

I recently tested it on a Panasonic DMP-BD10 that had the most recent Firmware installed. On this player, the connection to the TV was analog through a YUV component cable. The effect is strange: The Menu is displayed properly in 1080i but as soon as the film is started, the display switches to PAL 576i. This never happens if HDMI output is used.

My question: Does DVDit Pro HD set a flag that forces this downscaling if analog output is used? If so, I didn't find anything in the settings to disable it. Or is there another reason for this?

Thanks for your help

Yes, of course it could be a player issue. I haven't been able to test this on another player yet. However, a standard pressed blu-ray disc on the same player outputs to 1080p no problem. If it's a player issue, it has to do with BD-R compatibility. My hope is though, that it's a (resolvable) software issue.

Maybe Scott knows for sure, but I don't think BD-R/RE has the ability to set that type of flag as BD-ROM. I think video using analog output is supposed to be downverted to 480i (maybe 720p? via component) so maybe the region flag needs to be set for A (US/Japan, I think)...might give it a try.

It will depend on the setup procedure for the specific player. I burn BD-r's all the time and play them back on a BDP-S1 with analog hookup and have no problem what so ever in 1080i. That mode has to be chosen from a menu.
